Background:
My 5-month-old has been experiencing gastrointestinal issues since 3 months of age. He is mostly breastfed with an occasional dream feed of formula. Below is a timeline of his symptoms:

  1. Newborn (up to 3 months): He passed mustard-yellow poop several days a week.
  2. At 3 months: The frequency slowed to just one poop per day, which became more runny.
  3. At 4.5 months: He started experiencing diarrhea, which has persisted. Initially, he passed loose yellow stools, but over time they became more mucusy.
Current Symptoms (past 5 days):
  • Poop is now primarily mucus, dark green or yellow in color, sometimes with small specks of blood.
So Far We have been to the A&E and GP multiple times. They tested for bacterial infections but were not overly concerned as the baby remains happy and engaged. We have been prescribed Aptamil Pepti-1 (hydrolyzed formula) and I started an elimination diet (no soy, eggs, wheat, or dairy) a week ago.

I am concerned as the poop has become even more mucusy with noticeable blood specks (even after starting the elimination diet). The baby’s weight gain has slightly slowed. While we have a paediatrician appointment in two months, I am very worried about the ongoing symptoms and the interim period.

I’m looking for any insights, similar experiences, or advice. How can I best manage this situation until our paediatrician appointment? Should I push for more immediate care or testing?

I’m not an expert but the poop sounds fairly normal for a BF baby apart from the blood specs!

bump for you
