A very very prolonged cough

My son who is 2 has a very prolonged cough. Since July, almost 6 months. It’s the worst at night. Fits of coughing. We have gone to the drs who have said there is nothing we can do. He will get better. My daughter who is 8 months in now a month in to having the cough and we are exhausted for not having sleep for the last 6 months because the coughing is constant. We have tried humidifiers/dehumidifiers/ we have been suggested pumps/ we’ve tried honey with the older one/ he’s even been on antibiotics when his chest has been clear.
tell me this isn’t normal, yes he’s at nursery and maybe getting things from there but this isn’t right. The drs say there’s nothing to be done but it’s now effecting life for us all due to the lack of sleep. What can I do! Has anyone else gone or going through this

Have you been given an asthma inhaler to try? Cough variant asthma would be near the top of my list for a cough this long, worse at night. There’s often a reluctance to diagnose asthma this young but a trial of an inhaler might be an option. Post nasal drip caused by allergies might be another possibility, you could ask your GP about allergy meds? I feel your pain, the lack of sleep long term is crippling.

Have you videoed the coughing fits to show the doctor?

Mine has cough variant asthma and this sounds so similar.

Not all GPs seemed to get it but the one who did was brilliant.

Also allergies.

We had a few things that helped but obviously depends on your child.

My first thought was asthma too. I’d go back to the doctors.

Another for asthma. My DS always gets a horrible barking cough (mainly early morning / just before bed) and his us asthma related. I would go back to the GP.

Have you tried piriton?
