Paracetamol and ibuprofen dosage

Hiya, just wanted a quick question answering.... my ds will be 14 this coming Saturday. He's 5ft 3 and weighs 50kg - can anyone advise how much paracetamol and ibuprofen he can have.

He has a really stubborn temperature and feels pretty rubbish. I've been giving 1 paracetamol and 1 ibuprofen (not at same time just as needed) but don't feel like it's enough.

Thanks in advance for any help.

What does the box say for his age?

dementedpixie · 09/12/2024 20:36

Ibuprofen is usually 1 or 2 tablets a maximum of 3 times a day for over 12s

Nhs suggests 750mg for that age which would be 1½ tablets

Check the box as pp said , but last time my 12yo had bad ear pain we were giving 2 x200mcg of ibuprofen alternated with 1 x 500mcg paracetamol, this was following the dosage on the adult boxes
We did find the 500mcg dose of paracetamol wasn't really strong enough and would wear off quickly. At one stage when we ran out of adult in paracetamol we gave him 3 Calpol six-plus fast melts, again following the dosage on box for his age. I realised this was better as each fast melt is 250mcg so he was getting more paracetamol than with the adult capsules.

Also you can alternate them to keep the temp under control so take 2 ibuprofen, after three hours take 1 or 1.5 paracetamol, three hours later take ibuprofen again. Maybe do that for a day and see if that helps get it manageable.
I always keep a note on phone of what I'm giving when I do this, as it's easy to get confused with ill kids making you stressed or tired. But it does help.

Does the box not say adult dosage for age 12+?

dementedpixie · 09/12/2024 20:50

Just remember ibuprofen is 3 times in 24 hours and paracetamol is 4 times in 24 hours

PartyOFive · 09/12/2024 20:53

Yes to clarify you still need to stick to 3times in 24 hours for ibuprofen but the minimum timing is 6 hours between I think. 8 hours obviously better cos you'd get even doses across 24 hours but you can in theory do one at midday, 6pm, midnight and then wait 12 hours for your next dose.

Thanks all. I seem to be getting myself in complete pickle. We're both suffering from the same symptoms so my concentration is lacking.
Think I'll try him with 1.5 paracetamol and 1 ibuprofen.

He's had 2 paracetamol doses since 7am and 1 ibuprofen dose.

I'd imagine an adult dose. I'm 5ft1 and just over 50kg. I always have 2 every 3-4hrs and max 8 per 24hr as the box says.

fruitpastille · 09/12/2024 21:03

I haven't weighed my teenagers but they always just take 2 tablets but not more than the recommended dose for 24 hours.

dementedpixie · 09/12/2024 21:14

The boxes I have agree with what i said before:

Up to 1½ paracetamol 4 times a day and
1 or 2 ibuprofen 3 times a day
