Help! Mouth Sores

MixedCouple2 · 08/12/2024 19:40

I am so desperate my DS 3 has been so poorly last 48hours. Scream crying in pain. He has mouth ulcers on his tongue and lip only. Apparently that is not hand, foot and mouth disease. And doesn't sound like Herpangina as no sores on his mouth or throat just the tongue.
We have been giving him paracetamol and ibuprofen all day and night and not made any difference. He is scream crying on and off. I have not idea what to do.
We tried home remedies and ice lollies and smoothie pouches and lots of water. Nothing is helping.
He now longer has a fever that lasted 1 days. He has a runny nose a small cough. Just the pain is the issue.
Anyone have any ideas what this is?

Sounds like it could be Hand, foot and mouth to me but I’d also be wondering about a primary herpes simplex (cold sore virus) presentation. Regardless of cause though, I would recommend getting hold of some Difflam throat / mouth spray which has a numbing effect, and / or some Anbesol liquid to apply to the sores. Maintaining hydration will be your main issue so definitely flag that with the GP tomorrow.

Sounds like the oral herpes virus to me- very poorly and very sore for the first outbreak.

MixedCouple2 · 08/12/2024 22:02

@fourelementary I did think that is it but when i looked it up it says mouth sores on the gums and roof of mouth his is just on the tongue and thats where he complains of the pain.

My son had this many years ago now. Similar story. Went to OoH and no help. Turns out it was HFM but only one spot on hand. He screamed in pain for 3 days and it lasted 1 week total. He only ate ice lollies. For 1 week. It’s horrendous to see but you and he will survive. Be kind to yourself and this will pass

Thank you for sharing your story. How did you manage with sleepless nights? I have a 4month old baby who wakes every 2 hours and I am very sick with what he has but no blisters just aches and pains and cough. I feel like I am going to die of exhaustion. I haven't slept properly since Thursday night.

How did you find out it was HFM in the end?

We got on sleep at all last night. I feel like death. DS has been crying on and off every 15mins he screams and cries and then settles then starts again.
OMG the NHS are trash!

Oh my gosh you poor thing. First things first I’d ask GP to prescribe him paracetamol and ibuprofen dosages according to his weight - the dosages on the packaging are age related not weight dependant and if you can maximise pain relief according to his weight that would be helpful. I’d also make sure you get some anbesol if you can, and difflam spray if you haven’t already. Anecdotally I have also heard that applying sensodyne toothpaste on sores can help…

This too shall pass but HF&M can be horrendous, especially for adults, and the no-sleep must be doing you in. Am so sorry you have not had better NHS experiences. Is his screaming all mouth-related? Worth the GP double checking his ears or for any other sources of pain.
