Too much calpol

Maggie333 · 26/11/2024 23:00

DD (3) has been off nursery with a fever today, at home with DH while I was at work. She had calpol at 23:00 last night and 05:20 this morning.

I put her to bed when I got home and when I asked DH if she’d had any more calpol today, he said she’d had a dose at 10:30. Great, all good, so I gave her some at 7pm before bed as she was miserable.

Now he turns to me, hours later, and says “oh, actually I did give her another calpol, probably around 3:30-4:30?”

I have checked NHS guidance for calpol and it states to call 111 if a child has had 2 or more extra doses in 24h, which she hasn’t, she’s just had one extra dose, but she had also had a dose potentially 1:30 too early as well?

i don’t want to waste 111 time and DH says it won’t be a problem, but I’m still anxious - would you call?

thanks

Make the call

As a once off I’d not worry too much. She’ll be fine.

mynameiscalypso · 26/11/2024 23:04

How big is she? I'd be more worried if she was very small and slight for her age

RosesAndHellebores · 26/11/2024 23:07

I wouldn’t worry. I hope you have a good night. Do you have any nurofen to give if she wakes grizzly in the night?

BonbonJJx97 · 26/11/2024 23:07

Just call 111 to ease your worries

NeedSomeComfy · 26/11/2024 23:08

I would call if you are anxious. That's what 111 is there for.
Incidentally for the future, a friend of mine shared a tip which has been really useful for us. Make a WhatsApp group called 'Child's name's medications', for you and your DH (and any other caregivers). Every time you give a medication, write it there with the time and the dose. Makes it so much easier to keep track.

SummerFeverVenice · 26/11/2024 23:08

I think it’s fine. A slightly early dose once in 24hr cycle isn’t an issue. Just let DD sleep and give the next dose a bit later so you are back on track.

The maximum dose is 75mg/kg/day so add up the total mg (either 120mg in 5ml for infant or 250mg in 5ml for 6+)
then divide by weight in kg
If it’s under 75 you’re fine.
if it’s over 75 you need to go to A&E but it’s unlikely to be a toxic at the levels you’ve described so don’t worry too much!

I wouldn't worry. From my reading it seems like she's had one extra dose and only half an hour too early within the whole timeframe you're talking about. I really wouldn't worry about it - especially if the NHS website states two doses over rather than one, which this is.
