Hello,

23MO was given co amoxiclav yesterday to treat an ear infection. The kids have had back to back colds since summer but out of nowhere LOnstarted running a temperature of 40 and very lethargic. They saw some fluid behind the ear so started the antibiotics last nigh after my partner took LO in to O.O.O doctors.

How long typically does it take for the antibiotics to start showing improvement? He’s very lethargic and these temperatures are still reaching 40 :(.

My eldest daughter has just finished penicillin for a throat infection she had and it was quite a quick turn around (not used to treating ear infections)

thank you

Does her temperature come down with paracetamol and ibuprofen?

Antibiotics will be 24-48hrs to see a real improvement.

What are you giving for the temp and is it coming down in between?

Temperatures are a good thing, they show that the body is doing its job to fight the infection. The main thing to worry about is not how high the temperature is going but if it responds to the medication. Alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen throughout the day. As long as the temperature is going down for short periods then that’s fine. Antibiotics will take about 48 hours to start kicking in. Make sure he’s drinking plenty and keep an eye on wet nappies. If he becomes very lethargic (not perking up when medication working, not moving or any interest in playing at all) starts vomiting, not drinking etc then needs to be seen again. Try not to worry, temperatures make them feel grotty but should be on the mend soon.

Thanks for all of your advice. He’s temperature is coming down slightly to neurofen and calpol but always shooting back up to 40 by the 4/5 hour mark. No improvement at all yet in himself. Very lethargic still not really eating

I'd give him today to allow the antibiotics to do their job. Keep up fluids but if no improvement by this evening then I'd have him seen again. He might need a different antibiotic

Gcsunnyside23 · 27/11/2024 06:56

If he's still not improved by today I'd definitely go back. That's 2 days of antibiotics so should have some effect by now

You can alternate between Calpol and ibuprofen so effective every 2 hours to keep temp down, will also help LO with the pain. X

Took him back the nurse told us she couldn’t see anything when looking in he’s ears throat etc. Told me she won’t change antibiotics as these are a broad spectrum ones and to keep going. She said if the temperature persists it’s probably just viral 😣felt a waste. He’s temperature is still shooting up so high when the calpol or neurofen wears off… worrying me :( he’s had a temperature since Sunday night. Also extremely explosive poos now too because of these antibiotics

It sounds ridiculous, but cut an onion in half and put the cut side of one half against the ear. It helps enormously.
