Umbilical cord still attached after 4 weeks - cause for concern?

My baby is 4 weeks old. The umbilical cord has not fallen off and shows no signs of doing so. I understand this can indicate underlying medical problems. Does anyone have experience of this please?

Congratulations first of all!

Have you taken your baby to be seen by the health visitor or GP? What have they said?

Does it look red or swollen? Any discharge or bad smell?
If not I wouldn't panic but definitely give your GP or HV a call as it should have come off by now ideally

Thank you for the replies. There's no sign of infection or soreness. Midwife has said if it hasn't come off by next week she will refer us (not sure who to). She said not to worry but also that she hasn't seen this before.

Woke up this morning and and the umbilical cord has fallen off. Four weeks and two days. So no need to worry. So relieved. Saw midwife today who said she had never known it take so long. Thanks to those who responded.

I've had one that still had the cord at 2 weeks, the paediatrician had me dab the base each day with a cotton bud dipped in Isopropyl Alcohol each morning and night to dry it out. It came off after a few days of this. Ask the midwife if they use this or have some other cream or ointment.

Crossed post see it's come off now.
