Help with constipation management

Hi all,

mum of 3 DD’s (11, 8, 4)

DD 11 & DD 4 have quite severe constipation. DD 11 was investigated and it seems to be just slow transit, which seems to be generational in our family (I had it & mum had it)

DD 4 takes a sachet of movicol a day and I find that the best way to keep her regular is to mechanically stay on top of things, ie encouraging her to try and poo 1-2 times a day, sometimes encouraging her into a squatting position.

I still find we are having poo staining accidents every other day. The consistency seems to be ok, quite varied day to day from smooth to knotty. I’m afraid of making her strain when there’s nothing there but generally when I skip a poo she will end up in trouble and we could have a 2 foot long specimen within a couple of days!

now we are starting to have wee accidents as well which may be related, but she is also at that age where she doesn’t want to do go to the toilet when she is playing for fear of missing out. It’s been happening enough lately (1-2 little spillages a day) that we now have to ask her to go every 2 hours to stay on top of it.

just wondering if anyone else has been through something similar and how it worked out? DD 11 had the wee accidents but not the poo ones do this is slightly new territory for us!

thanks

It's hard to know, it's all guesswork isn't it? Which is massively frustrating. I suppose if her wee accidents are coinciding with the days she's constipated then it could be that causing it as being backed up does cause more frequent weeing. But then again if it's happening when she's not backed up it could just be as you say her not being bothered to go which a lot of children that age do! How long has she been potty trained for?

What is your constipation routine with dd11 or has it resolved?
