9 month old been poorly for weeks- getting worse!

My 9 month old started getting poorly with a typical cold 3 weeks ago and was getting on fine with eating / drinking.

however last week I got a call from nursery to say he’d choked on his lunch and was very snotty. Then later that afternoon spiked a temp of 39. I rushed to pick him up and took him straight to docs. His temp was 39.7 heart was fast and feet and hands were cold so they called an ambulance. Spent most of the evening in a&e and they just said his throat was sore and gave a spray.
he hasn’t improved since then, totally off solids and reduced his milk intake by half. He’s trying water but has a couple of sips and starts to cry. He’s so grumpy and not his usual happy self and it’s breaking my heart. I’ve been back to the docs on Wednesday and they said his throat was so swollen and prescribed antibiotics and should see improvement after first day. Well he’s been on it 2 days and he’s worse. He’s snotty again, choked on his breakfast (presuming his throat is that swollen) and is miserable. He’s had calpol and neurofen nearly every day for 3 weeks. I don’t know what to do. Are these illnesses meant to go on this long? My first boy never had anything like this.

For reference he’s drinking enough for me to not take him back to a&e, he’s having wet nappies all be it a lot darker and smelly than usual. But not dry. I’m just concerned at how long it’s lasting with no improvement / getting worse.
the worrier in me is thinking what if he’s eaten something from nursery’s floor and it’s got lodged in his throat or something as I know at home I’m forever taking smalls bits of rubbish hes found on the carpet out of his hands etc 😣

I would call GP. Say you’re concerned no improvement, possibly even a little worse, and please can they give him a check over today.

Poor little lad! I can sympathise as I've had a miserable cold for about 5 weeks now and, as well as feeling ill, am also grumpy with the fact that I have been so ill for so long.
I think you need to take him to the GP again. It's good he's having wet nappies but the fact they have been darker and smellier for so long is a bit concerning.
I always used to give mine ice lollies when they had a sore throat. That helped numb the pain and then I'd get some food and drink in them. I never had to try that trick on one so young as your little one though so am not sure if it work would.

Two days of AB and no improvement warrants another check by a doctor. Take him back today. Hope he’s better soon, it sounds so miserable for him.

Can you clarify when he started the antibiotics? You said you took him to see gp Wednesday (yesterday) but he's been on them for 2 days?
Personally I always give antibiotics 3 days to fully kick in, if they're not improving by then then it's back to doctors. Obviously if they're severely worsening I go back sooner. This has been going on a while so it's most likely a nasty infection that needs a bit longer for the antibiotics to work. If he's struggling with eating, up his milk feeds. If mine have throat/eating problems I get them some of the fruity breakfast pouches too, pop them in the fridge so they're cold and soothing. Hope he soon feels better.

Sorry getting my days mixed up! He went to the gp on Tuesday. I keep thinking it’s Friday today! So he had his dose on Tuesday then wednesday then one so far today.
im just worried about his constant choking on even fluids! If it’s not getting better with antibiotics when what will make it better ? 😞

I'd take him back or to your nearest urgent care. You're worried, he's 9 Months old that alone warrants him being checked over again.

ICSH1 · 31/10/2024 12:48

I’d take him somewhere today too. I know a lot of people wait 3 days for antibiotics but my GP friend said if there’s no noticeable difference after 48 hours it’s likely not going to be the right medicine to beat that particular bug. If could be that your little one is just catching one bug after another but he a been laid low a little bit too long now so I think I’d get him looked at, it must be so miserable for you both x

I would take him back, my DS who is 6 months just had tonsillitis, he was really poorly for a week until the gp finally gave him antibiotics and he was back to his normal self within 48 hours of taking them. I couldn’t believe how fast they worked! Are you giving him Nurofen? That was better than calpol for DS sore throat.
