Hands in mouth and red tonsils

DS is 2 and a half, over the past week or 2 he’s started putting his fingers and hands in his mouth all the time - it’s relentless. I’ve had a look in his mouth and no ulcers, but his tonsils look almost bloodshot and red, larger than I’d expect.
He hasn’t had a fever at all, has been eating and drinking normally. No signs of cough or cold of HFM, he’s had all his teeth in for a while.
Wondering if anyone has seen similar?
