DD hasn't been well since Friday, we've spoken to pharmacy as directed by GP, then optician as pharmacist suspected bacterial conjunctivitis due to funky eyes which we've been managing by rinsing with saline / warm water.

Been giving paracetamol on schedule as unable to give brufen due to being in the 6 week time out from her second dose of chicken pox vaccine 💉

Saw GP today who has said viral keep doing what we are doing but since then her slight cough has got worse over the course of the day and she's struggling to settle. Barking cough and her temp has shot up to 39.2. When we saw GP this am it was sitting in the low 38's. Asked if we could do brufen and was told to continue with paracetamol.

She's drinking OK, appetite slightly reduced and have had wet / dirty nappies.

Last time this happened was after her first dose of chicken pox vaccine and we ended up at A&E due to febrile convulsion for the peads team to sign off giving brufen as that's what usually breaks high temp in daughter. Their rationale was no rash = fine to give brufen. We are 13 days post 💉

I am 'sleeping' in with her but absolutely terrified of another convulsion happening. I've got her in a lightweight vest / pj bottoms / nappy. Room is 19.2 degrees with the humidifier running as well.

Any wisdom MN'tters I am on my knees with this latest 'viral' thing even though my gut is saying it's going to go the same way as after her 1st chicken pox vaccine 😞 😩

I would give ibuprofen. The risk is around children with chickenpox developing a secondary bacterial infection after taking ibuprofen which is vanishingly rare. From what you have said she does not have any rash? Why have you been told not to give it?

We were told by the vaccine 💉 team not to give brufen for 6 weeks post jag, treat it the same as if she had chickenpox as it's a live vaccine. After her first dose the paeds team gave clearance to give brufen due to no rash so I'm confused 🫤 😩

No rash - I've been over her checking with a fine tooth comb

I’d ring 111 or out of hours GP service for advice.

slipperypenguin · 22/10/2024 00:13

I'd ring 111 based on the history

In the triage call queue for 111, I'm hoping they will give clearance to give brufen - the last time we spoke to them they weren't aware of the no brufen and while we were waiting on callback was when DD had her convulsion due to her temp peaking at 41.2 which is how we ended up at A&E / peads previously. Really worried about history repeating itself DD seems to be like DH who still has convulsions if he has a high temp and also vomits spectacularly just beforehand 🫠

Ok, whilst you are in the queue can you check her temp again? What time was the last dose of paracetamol?

YouLookLikeStevieNicks · 22/10/2024 00:24

Sorry is brufen the same as ibuprofen? I've never heard of it.

Hopefully 111 will be able to help.

Shallysally · 22/10/2024 08:12

How’s DD today @motherhoodmcrollercoaster?

Yes brufen = ibuprofen, sorry for lack of replies in the night, MN app went weird on me about to do an update 💖

Spoke to 111 (apologies @Shallysally
MN app was being weird in the small hours) they said to keep going with paracetamol even though I explained that it was a similar situation after 1st dose of chicken pox 💉 😵‍💫

Temp is still bouncing around and DD is off her normal food this morning but happily took yoghurt and some milk. Quiet day today and hoping for a break in the weather so we can at least go for a pram walk around the estate for some fresh air 🫠 thankfully I'm on leave this week so haven't had the added complication of work in the mix too 😩

You ever need to apologise, was just checking in. Fresh air will do you both good. Hope little one is on the mend soon.

motherhoodmcrollercoaster · 22/10/2024 10:32

@Shallysally thank you for the check in it's really appreciated unmumsnethug trying to encourage DD to go for her nap and she's currently doing lengths of her cot / clapping herself 🫠 according to my mum I was very similar at DD age and didn't behave like a sick child 😩

Oh bless her! 😆 glad she’s not feeling too poorly at the moment!

Naters2023 · 22/10/2024 11:45

Oh bless her my 17 month old is going through the exact same thing I'll since Thursday.
She also had the chicken pox vaccine maybe 5 weeks ago and I have been giving her ibuprofen, the nurse never told me not to give this.
Hope she gets better soon

motherhoodmcrollercoaster · 22/10/2024 22:44

@Naters2023 I'm hoping so too, about to do a temp check and draw up the paracetamol just in case I need to dream medicate 🫠 it's still bouncing around but nowhere near the 39s thankfully 😮‍💨

I hope your wee one is doing OK and has a good recovery ❤️‍🩹

The odd thing is DD seems 'fine' in herself just a hot potato!!
