I’m freaking out!! My baby had a few bottles from a tin of formula that was open more than a month ago at my mums house & now I’m absolutely riddled with anxiety that he’s going to end up with food poisoning😭 he’s only had 2 feeds from the tin & it smelt absolutely fine earlier on however I got a wiff of the tin when collecting him & it smelt like rotten eggs but my mum assures me it was fine earlier that day.

He’s been fine so far, not sick, still eating well no tell tale signs of food poisoning thankfully…

I’m going to call the doctors in the morning for peace of mind but I need advice I feel so worried that he’s going to end up severely ill 😞😞😞

Don’t worry! She’ll be absolutely fine. I think it’s much less of a health issue than a quality issue as it’s a shelf stable product. I’m pretty sure I’ve u wittingly given my baby formula that had been open more than a month many a time.

If he’s fine now, I really wouldn’t worry. I’m not even sure I’d bother contact the doctor, what do you think they’ll do? It’s a non perishable, highly processed food - I can’t see how it would expire to the point of being unsafe.

He will be fine, there is absolutely no need to bother a doctor over this!

Worst case scenario is that some of the nutrients will have degraded so it won't have the right levels of them. But for a couple of feeds that's not dangerous. Just chuck it out and move on.

From your thread title I thought he'd drunk an actual bottle made up 3 months ago, which even I would have been a bit worried about 😂 but this really isn't something to stress over, honestly.

Completelyjo · 10/10/2024 06:36

It’s fine.

MumChp · 10/10/2024 06:38

No problem. Baby will be fine!

Thank you all so much for replying with positive comments & reassuring me. I was beside myself thinking he was gonna end up poisoned. He’s not been sick nor had a change in poopy nappies so that’s promising. I think I panicked as much because I heard of the little one in America passing away due to bacteria in formula & it just made my mind run wild!

The bacteria in formula is a real issue but it's not to do with how the dry product is stored or the age, it's to do with the manufacturing process. That's the reason you're advised to make feeds fresh using hot water, to sterilise the powder itself. That's far more important than whether the powder is a few weeks out of date!

As long as it was made with hot (almost boiling) water any bugs will have been killed.

If it was made with cold water, then I'd say there's a slightly elevated risk due to there having been more time for bacteria to multiply in the tin, but only a slight elevation. If the bad bugs are in there, then they will have been in there when you opened the tin.
