Tonsillitis 4 times in a month!

I'm hoping to hear from some health professionals on this, I'm planning to take my son back to the GP tmw but in the meantime I'm worried. Could do with some reassurance.

DS5 has come down with a temperature and large, inflamed tonsils this afternoon and that's the 4th time since he went back to school early September. The 3rd time he was given antibiotics. He really struggles to sleep and eat with it. He's been looking so pale and tired and been pretty fed up and not himself.

Could there be something else going on to cause it or is this just back to school bugs and he's been unlucky? He's had throat infections and tonsillitis before but not at this frequency.

Thank you

My DD gets this. Has it improved in between? As it's been so many times in such a short space it could be the same infection that he hasn't recovered from. How long a course if antibiotics was it? We've found it needs at least ten days.

If it continues, ask for an ENT referral.

It seemed to improve in terms of he stopped having a temperature and tonsils became less red and smaller but perhaps it wasn't fully gone then. It was a 7 day course.
Sorry your daughter has it also- thanks for sharing.

4 times is an awful lot. We had 3 times in 4 weeks and I thought that was bad enough.

Have you managed to see the GP yet today?

We saw a health professional today, she wasn't a GP but a paramedic running a throat clinic. She swabbed him for strep A and prescribed more antibiotics. I'm still waiting for the prescription to be signed off and sent to the pharmacy. She said the best treatment is penicillin but unfortunately he's allergic to that. The other antibiotics aren't as effective apparently.

DS has been a mess, very sore red throat and tonsils. Very painful for him to swallow, he's been crying and sleeping a lot. Just awful.

If he deteriorates or you are worried at all then ring 111. Also make sure you know the signs of dehydration.

If he's not feeling better on a couple of days I'd go back and push for a referral to ENT Flowers

Well he recovered with 2 rounds of antibiotics, had 4 days feeling well and back at school and he's now got hand foot and mouth AND strep throat again. He's back on antibiotics for the throat.

Dr has said he's got very reactive tonsils but as yet doesn't meet the threshold for an ENT referral but I will keep pushing. Weirdly all sore throat stuff is being outsourced by another surgery so we aren't seeing the same person every time
