School and asthma symptoms

Those with children who have asthma at what point do you keep them off school?
It sounds a silly question but DS has regular coughs over the winter period that can go on for a few weeks. He missed a lot of days at nursery due to it.

He has just started school now and obviously his health comes first but I also can't keep him off for every cough. Another cough has started in the last few days. He is more or less fine in himself still eating/drinking/playing/no temperature. The cough is getting worse at night though. Luckily he has his asthma review tomorrow.

When speaking to the school they advised me to send him in and they call me if there is an issue.

I sent ds2 in, but with communication with the school. So, they made sure he kept his jumper on, and on particularly cold/foggy days, or if his cough was bad, he played inside at morning break etc.

Thankfully, he grew out of it mostly, although he had couple of bad episodes in years 5/6.
