Could my 3 year old have a uti?

My 3 year old son for the last two days has been complaining of pain on his p. I had a look and there was a little redness that looked like a rash so put some cream on and thought that was it. He was fine and eating and playing so nothing abnormal. I noticed yesterday that when he woke up his nappy was empty. He is toilet training and only has a nappy for bed. I realised that although that little rash had gone he was still in pain.

Today he woke up with a full nappy but seems to be holding in his wee and scared to pee. He hasn't Been eating as much as normal and is warm to the touch. I've been getting him to drink lots of water but after that one wee in the morning he's only had a small one since.

I'm taking him right to the doctors in the morning for a urine test but does anyone know if this sounds like uti. I am so worried and keep checking his nappy to see if he's had a wee even though he is asleep

It sounds like it - unless he maybe has an infection in his penis? Does it look swollen?
Anyhow taking him to the doctor is sensible.

Yes! Take a tub of wee with you if you can to GP. Less common in boys but it does happen. Could also be thrush. Definitely get it checked out

Yes, we had something similar when DS was 3. Urine test was negative but doctor thought it was most likely a UTI so prescribed us antibiotics.

However, after this appointment we worked out he got the infection because he was holding in wee, because he was also holding in poo, after 1 slightly painful movement. And so began our withholding nightmare (which in relieved to say only lasted 2 weeks).

Has he been pooing like normal?
