Hi my 7 year old son has had this line but much thinner for around 2 months. I thought it would just grow out but in the last week it has got thicker and more obvious. I'm going to call the doctor tomorrow but in the meantime just wondered if anyone knows what this could be? I'm worried 😟

It needs seeing.

littleoldme3 · 24/09/2024 05:57

@Dontbeabitterlemon Did you manage to get it checked? I agree with @DustyLee123 - it needs checked!

Fraaahnces · 24/09/2024 06:00

DEFINITELY take to doctor for this one. It is probably a simple nail injury or a splinter, but it can indicate more sinister things too. It needs to be physically seen.

Thank you all. We've had it seen and been referred to dermatology.

Thanks for letting us know

I am so scared. I don't know why buy today its just going round on a loop in my head, going to the worst case.

The doctor said she suspects melanychia. She said it's reassuring that it doesn't extend to the top of the nail. She said it's quite common and not to worry. A few months ago his sister accidentally went over his foot on the rocking horse. I remember him being very upset. I can't remember if it was this foot but I'm hoping it's just to do with that. I just don't understand why it's getting wider and doesn't seem to be growing out.

@Dontbeabitterlemon You’ve done the right thing by getting it checked. It’s most likely completely harmless but always better being sure.
It’s natural to think of the worst case (I think! I know I do when anything is going on here) but try and just wait and get a professional opinion rather than spending too much time on Google!
Did they say how long they’d expect you to wait for a dermatologist?

Containergardener · 26/09/2024 22:52

My 7 year old had this, he's now 10. Totally freaked myself out with Google, please don't.
He got checked by dermatologist, think was diagnosed as a freckle in the nail bed and had the all clear.

A few years on now the line has disappeared.
Worth getting checked but try not to worry until a specialist has seen. All the best.

Containergardener · 26/09/2024 22:57

It was like this, now back to normal. Hope offers some reassurance but do get checked out

Thank you all. 2 weeks to go until appointment (managed to get one through private) I will update when I know more.
