I had a worrying visit to Health Visitor this morning who asked if my baby’s head “had always been like that?” I replied “like what?” And he said big.

I was quite taken aback and he also said not to worry me just to get a physical check with doctor at next injection appointment.

Well of course I then went home, worried, googled and measured and found his head is 99.9 centile (50cm at 12 months). I’d never thought of it as big and always just thought he looked like his dad. I called my GP who saw us and said she couldn’t say for certain but she didn’t think it was anything to worry about as no other symptoms, she then measured it and compared to birth measurement which was more like 50 centile I think. After that she said she’d refer to pediatrics just because of the jump in centiles but still not to worry.

he’s meeting all the milestones, babbling saying mama dada bye, nearly walking etc

anyway just wanted to see if anyone had experience of this? Any reassurance’

Hi OP, my DS and DS’s friend had big heads; nothing to worry about and it was that they took after their dads (who both have big heads!). It’s good you’re being referred to paeds as a double-check type thing. If the Gp was acutely worried, you would likely have been sent straight to hospital / have an urgent appointment with paeds.

Better to double check. If no other issues then sure its all fine. My sons head grew fast and went off top of chart by 2 months. But i already knew issues and he had hydrocephalus. Many other symptoms as well tho

Thank you for your message, that must have been worrying for you. I hope all is well now with your son and he got the treatment he needed. No other symptoms with my son, so guess that’s a good sign

Thank you for your reassurance - yes his dad also has a larger head and it’s very similar in shape so I’ll try not to panic and you’re right, it’s a good thing to get checked out just to rule anything out.
