Anyone's little ones ever had mastoiditis? My 6 year old woke yesterday saying behind her ear hurt. It was swollen and red so kept her at home for the day. No temp, eating and drinking ok, usual self. Woke this morning to the swelling increasing, red and painful so managed to get her appt. 2 drs checked her over and advised to ring ent at hospital. Was told because she's fine in herself to give her strong antibiotics for 7 days. Honestly if it wasn't for the swelling and pain you wouldn't think she was poorly at all! But now I'm
Panicking badly and convinced she should
Be in hospital with iv antibiotics like it says online

Just seen this and didn't want to ignore you, especially as mastoiditis is fairly uncommon. I have had a lifetime of ear problems and mastoid infections in particular. I have also needed operations. However, medication has come on in leaps and bounds since I first had problems over fifty years ago. It is a nasty infection and can cause all sorts of problems if left untreated for long. However, in your daughter's case, you were on the ball, as was your gp, who realised it was beyond his remit and immediately sent her to an expert. I am sure that you will have been given the best advice and, because it was caught early, there was no need for an iv drip in hospital. Hopefully, she is feeling much better now and that this infection be a one-off.
