Ear pain

My DS woke up at 3am with excruciating ear pain. He's 11 and this has happened intermittently for years. I gave calpol and that seemed to help. I've never suffered with my ears. Does a blocked ear cause pain? Sometimes he will be clutching his ear and crying. He's a tough cookie and normally has quite a high threshold for any kind of illness but seems to really suffer when his ears are bad. Any idea what this is?

Poor thing and I sympathise. It could be an inner ear infection. I used to suffer from them constantly when very young. I had a grommet inserted age 4, and never had issues afterwards. When your DS has has this before- did he see the GP for treatment? Does he have any speech issues or hearing loss- both common in kids with recurrent ear infections.

I was very young, but I still recall the pain. In my head, when trying to sleep with awful ear pain, I imagined someone walking up metal lighthouse steps, wearing heavy, metal boots. The slow, boom, boom, boom. I now realise that it was my heatbeat I could somehow hear in my ear! I recall wishing mum would pour lemonade in my ear, because I thought the bubbles might lift and remove the infection 😔Over 40yrs on, I recall this time in great detail. The pain, out of hours GP visits, antibiotics, the surgery age 4 etc.
