DD broken leg on holiday

My DD slipped on our friends boat this morning and has broken both bones in her lower leg. She now has a cast from her toes to her hip and understandably feels rubbish tonight. We have a 4 hour trip home tomorrow too which is another worry. Is there any tips to manage normal task while she adjusts to life for the moment x

How are you travelling?
How old is she?

MyTwinGirls · 25/08/2024 20:19

By car, oh sorry she is 13. We are here with her twin and little brother x

Regular pain killers help rather than the odd dose .

The last time I was on crutches it is exhausting .. elevate the leg as much as possible .

she will probably be pleased to get in her own bed

My ds had the same break last year, although he's a lot older.
Travelling by car, initially he had to be in the back seat with his leg across the back seat, any bumps in the road were very painful.
Pillow under leg in bed to help sleeping
Went upstairs on his bum backwards with someone holding his leg, again initially.
Plastic cast cover so they can shower, initially someone in the shower with them for balance
It took a couple of weeks before he could hobble round confidently on crutches.
Sorry to say but he was in plaster for 12 weeks and then a plastic boot for another 6 weeks

Poor kid, that car ride home is going to be brutal for her

MyTwinGirls · 25/08/2024 20:41

@Bigpinkslippers aww bless him thank you! The journey home was horrible too she really struggled! She is really struggling to get comfortable on the sofa we are still trying to find the best position. She does want to shower before bed she feels salty from being on the boat I am unsure how we are going to manage that but we will try shortly and then get her into bed

Limbo bag for showering and a shower seat. Contact school and leave a message for inset day as school so they can make suitable arrangements.

It won't help for tonight but there is a company called FreshWipes that do large size biodegradable wipes and I found them pretty good when I stayed somewhere I couldn't bath or shower for a week.

MyTwinGirls · 25/08/2024 22:05

Thank you I’ll have a look at those wipes. Showering was definitely awkward and difficult but managed to get most of the salt off her. she’s asleep already. I’m not looking forward to our trip home tomorrow

Can 1 of you get a train / lift with the other kids so she can have the whole back seat?

MyTwinGirls · 25/08/2024 22:20

@NorthernGirlie my son is going with our friend and both girls will sit in the boot seats with the others down with plenty of leg room (it’s a 7 seater)

Pillows under her leg in the car otherwise every little bump will jolt her leg. Keep on top of pain relief - paracetamol and ibuprofen alternately.

Bigpinkslippers · 25/08/2024 23:45

Just remembered another tip. Crutches can be really tough on your hands, we wrapped the grips with padded badminton racquet grip tape which helped

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 26/08/2024 10:19

Are you driving home today? Best of luck OP!

MyTwinGirls · 26/08/2024 16:37

It’s been a horrendous journey but we got home about an hour ago. She’s settled now on the sofa and Nan and Granada will be round later with their puppy for some cuddles 🥰 she’s pretty worn out the car made her sick but thankfully we are glad to be home
