Does Infant gaviscon cause constipation?

My baby suffers with reflux and also has a lot of gas in her stomach which upsets her. The doctor just prescribed her infant gaviscon for the reflux but I've heard that it causes constipation. Has anyone had this experience? If so does the constipation go away as the baby gets used to gaviscon or does it always stay. I'm kind of scared to give it to her

Anecdotally does seem to be a thing for some babies. You won't know until you try it, and a short spell of being a bit constipated if your child is sensitive to it ultimately isn't the end of the world and there's no lasting harm to be scared of.

If it is amazing for the reflux but bad at the bottom end, could try to even things up with lactulose.

It worked well for my daughter at the highest dose, but she was mega constipated and the discomfort and distress because of this was almost worse than the reflux itself.

Yes it does, but lactulose will help that. Ask your GP to prescribe some. It’s far better to treat the reflux as it causes pain and, if it continues for some time, can cause problems in the oesophagus.

Yes it did for mine. They were on infacol too which gave them diarrhoea so they balanced each other out.

They were also on domperidone and omeprazole.

It did for my twins - and didn’t help their reflux either!

They ended up being prescribed omeprazole liquid which made a massive difference to them both
