Toddler red cheek

Not sure if anyone can offer any advice here. My toddler has this patch on his cheek that is either dry/flaky/pale pink, or flares up bright pink/red and hot to the touch. It's flared up and down since April this year. At first it could be weeks between the flares, now it flares up once a week or more so it's pretty much like this all the time. We've been back and forth from our GP who kept prescribing hydrocortisone saying it was eczema, we tried keeping a food diary to see if it could be linked to an allergen, but no links arose.

Eventually got referred to dermatology and we had a telephone consultation this week. They prescribed an antifungal & hydrocortisone combined cream which we've been using since Tuesday evening but it seems to be getting bigger and more inflamed since. Top photo is Tuesday before nursery, bottom photo is this morning.

I rang the clinic to tell them this and waited all day for a call back with no success but I just thought l'd ask some opinions in here if anyone has any. It seems to cause him more discomfort when we put cream on it. Not just the prescribed one but suncream etc as well. I just have no idea what this could be and I'm hesitant to use the prescribed cream without hearing from the clinic, but not sure what could calm it down either.

Hi did you manage to sort this out ? My toddler gets red and warm cheeks on and off a lot and today they feel really dry .. I’m at my wits end with it and no clue what’s causing it.. x

Is you child bothered by it? Could it still be teething if just on one side? Saliva rash? You’ve been to the doctors who have suggested a dermatological reason for it, so you’re looking down the right avenues.
