6mo lump / redness next to nipple

Hi all, I haven’t posted on hear before but I have gained loads of advice from reading threads and I’m just wanting a bit of reassurance.

This evening when I was dressing my 6mo son after the bath I noticed one of his nipples and the surrounding area was very red compared to the other one (redness is new today), when I felt it, there was a very hard lump, slightly bigger than like a BB gun bullet, it wasn’t on the actual nipple but just to the right of it. It isn’t warm to touch and he isn’t bothered by it at all.

My first thought was breastbuds, but with my daughter (now 3yo) I actually took her to the GP as she had a similar lump directly in the middle of her nipple and was told it was a breast bud but this feels a lot different. I then thought maybe a bug bite but it’s not soft and then is no broken skin or anything like that.

Background: has been in hospital 3 times, once with sepsis and viral meningitis and another two with bronchitis. Has had 3 lumbar punctures, treatments with oxygen, an NG tube previously and also had chest and abdominal x-rays that were normally. recently had an MRI due to an abnormal EEG and I was told there is bruising on his brain from a previous bleed that stopped by itself and then have just need discharged from the paediatrician with no further follow up etc.

sorry for the long post, but if anyone has been through anything similar with their children or has any advice then I would appreciate it 🙏 of course if lump and redness is still there in the morning I will call the GP first thing for an appointment
