How long would you leave this for?

My 8yo DD had what I think was covid (as we all caught it) about a month ago. She had a cough, terribly runny nose, headaches and general aches and pains. She is otherwise fine now but her nose is still gunky; quite green and lots of snot when blowing on a daily basis. I literally have to take 4 or 5 tissues to blow her nose a couple times a day (it keeps coming when she blows!). She is not coughing and seems ok otherwise. Would you think this could be an infection in the sinuses, or just the illness petering out? Her chest sounds clear and she has no fever / headaches. Not sure what to do really. Thank you.

I should mention that initially the snot (I can’t think of a nicer word for it!) was quite chunky (start of the illness when she was having headaches), but now it’s like a thick string. Sorry if you’re having tea and reading this!

I would maybe phone GP as it hanging around but honestly I don't think they'll do a lot. They wouldn't give me antibiotics for my DD's ear or chest infection so not sure they would prescribe for sinuses? Maybe if she was still really suffering but if all other symptoms are petering out I would be inclined to ride it out.

Does she have a temp?

mycatsanutter · 14/08/2024 20:33

I would leave it another 3 weeks , sounds like it's heading in the right direction.

They only gave me antibiotics for my chest infection (after covid) as I'd had the cough 5 weeks and had a temperature. My chest sound crackling to.

You could give them a ring and see what they say. But I think it will most likely be wait and see if it clears up.

Thanks all. I think they will say just to hang fire - it is definitely better than it was (it was chunky and green) and she had headaches due to it. It doesn’t bother her now and is looking much better and she has no other symptoms (no fever, no headaches, no cough and breathing well with no crackles etc. I may give it another week and see if there’s an improvement. Thank you for the advice all 🙂

With the headaches too she might have a sinus infection.
If symptoms are static or getting worse I would go in the next few days.
If symptoms are getting better I probably would wait another week or two
