Glue ear or more?

Hi, Im looking for advice. My son is 22 months and has very limited speech approx 12-15 single words, uses very limited gestures (wave or point rarely) but does seem to undersrand most things. At the ENT clinic they said he has glue ear in both ears and he is due to get grommets next month. I feel like its more tho. Can any one who has a child that has had glue ear tell me was there behaviour the same? Very little use of gestures and imitating. I feel even if he has glue ear in both his ears he still could still communicate by using gestures & imitating. Thats why I feel like its more. Thanks
