Fever Day 9

My 9 year old finished school last Wednesday. The next day he had a fever, cough (sounds croup like) and generally unwell.

We did Covid tests which were all negative.

I took him to the doctors on Wednesday and the nurse said probably viral and made his asthma worse.

We are now on day 9 of fever, paracetamol and ibuprofen every 4-5 hours, cough still there, taking inhalers every few hours.

Has anyone else's children had this and lasted this long? I'm concerned because of the heat (we are south coast so pretty warm) he is drinking, not really eating. He is also awaiting assessments for autoimmune conditions (not sure if that's related)

Hi Op! Yes my DD (aged 8, with coeliac disease) has had the worst cold since last Wednesday. She is still snuffly, sore throat, running nose, cough and headache on and off. To start with she was super tired, shivery and just poorly. She is getting better (slowly but surely!!). My DS (11 with CD also) has been unwell for a couple of days with bad cough, sore throat, fever and tiredness. I’m hoping his doesn’t last as long but I’ve had it since Monday and still feel rubbish! I hope your DS is feeling better soon

This happened a few weeks ago (3weeks I think?) with our 2 year old. Very similar sounding- 9 nights of temps over 38, usuallly 39 but seemed kind of ok otherwise, if a bit grumpy. When I realised it had been 8 nights I took her to GP.

Two doctors listened very carefully to her chest and said it sounded 'completely clear' that same 2nd doctor sent us for a chest X ray (we'd been told to go to hospital by the GP due to length of time of fever despite her 'presenting ok')

Chest X ray showed a chest infection. 7 days antibiotics and she was better.

@Treesnbirds

Thank you for this. This is my worry. I have just been discharged from hospital myself with severe pneumonia and I'm concerned it's what he has too. I had no wheeze to begin with but my chest was dull on one side. I'm going to push for further investigations.

OMG you poor thing 😨. Yes I would do that. He'll prob be right as rain soon enough but may need a course of antibiotics if it's not shifting. For us she took a while to get back to 100% but the fever disappeared the first night after beginning the course. Really hope he feels better soon and really hope you can get some rest ♥️

I was always told by GPs that fever over 5 days in children should be taken very seriously. Needs further investigation in my opinion x
