DH thinks I’ve wasted money on DD5 glasses

DD is 5 and has been short sighted since the age of 4 and her prescription was a -1.00 in both eyes. In march I took her back and her eyes had deteriorated to a -1.75 and -2.00. During this appointment the optician brought up the idea of trying myopia control glasses for DD and told us to think it over and come back in 3 months. I took her back today and her eyes have now deteriorated to a -2.50 in both eyes and she now has astigmatism. Due to the rapid change I decided to go with the stellest myopia control lenses. It ended up costing quite a lot of money but we could afford it without putting any strain on us financially. DH seems quite mad and thinks it’s ridiculous to spend all that money on a pair of glasses for a child.
Am I wrong here? I think DD prescription at her age warrants the cost. It’s her eyesight ffs.

Optometrist here - you’ve absolutely done the right thing. The results from the studies have been amazing, short sightedness starting so young often results in a very high end prescription so these should make a huge difference

Spinet · 30/07/2024 22:42

My DD's eyesight was rapidly deteriorating and has leveled out since wearing the myopia control glasses for three years. She was 12 when she started wearing them and wishes she could have had them earlier (they didn't exist). You are absolutely right. If there is something you can do to improve your kid's future health and you can afford to do it, you do it!

Topseyt123 · 30/07/2024 22:44

Your DH is an arse.

He doesn't think it is worth investing in preserving his child's eyesight!! What a wonderful guy! Not.

Jellyfroglet · 30/07/2024 22:48

Honestly I am relieved to hear everyone else agrees with my decision. It felt like a no brainer and even if it doesn’t work for her at least I can say I did everything possible to help her eyesight.
It might sound petty but it’s really made me see him in a completely different light. I feel pretty grossed out at the thought he would put money over his child’s eyesight. He bought a ps5 with games last week and the glasses come to less than the fucking game console.
Ive tried to show him the clinical studies but he isn’t interested. DD is over the moon though with the glasses frames she picked!

My DD has had them for a year and her prescription hasn't changed. She went from fine vision to -1 in one eye. When we had her checked a few months later she was -1.5 in that eye and -1 in the other (can't remember if it was 3 or 6 months we waited). Got the lenses and they haven't changed since. I'm very short sighted and would do anything to preserve as much of her sight as I can. Even if it's just something basic like being able to see when you're at the swimming pool, it's worth it!

He prioritized a PS5 and games over his daughter's eyesight but you're the one who worries they are being petty? Yikes!

You sound like a great parent who has their priorities straight and I'm glad to hear your daughter is feeling positive about her new glasses!

Copperoliverbear · 30/07/2024 23:20

Tell him to get stuffed, he should want the best for his daughter

nocoolnamesleft · 30/07/2024 23:22

He thinks a fucking game console is a higher priority than the best glasses for your child? Fucking hell, he's an idiot.

ADHDHDHDHD · 30/07/2024 23:23

Blimey that's really shit parenting by him.
Your daughter is lucky to have you taking care of her.
How would he like it if everything was blurry?

Your daughters prescription sounds exactly like mine- I wear glasses ALL THE TIME

He is an idiot. You are correct.

TomatoSandwiches · 30/07/2024 23:25

@Jellyfroglet I had a stepfather thayt prioritised the first PS1 over a new cooker for his family of 6 as it had broken the same week the consols went on sale, we had to eat cereal and sandwiches for a month.

He was really selfish and shit in many other ways, the marriage didn't last.

snowballsintheoven · 30/07/2024 23:27

We've had these for DS for a couple of years

All seems well 🤷🏽‍♀️ it wasn't even a discussion for me and DH (we can well afford it) but yeah, your DH is a knob

Charliecatpaws · 30/07/2024 23:31

Your husband is an idiot

Deadringer · 30/07/2024 23:33

He sounds really stupid.

Invisimamma · 30/07/2024 23:37

Your DH is being a knob, I think we'd all prioritise our children's health and wellbeing if we possibly could.

But I thought all children's glasses were free. We've never had to pay and we're not on any benefits or anything like that.

Not the myopia control glasses. I can't afford them for DS. But, having read this thread, I have decided to at least try asking his useless twat of a father for the money 😬

Standard glasses with basic lenses for children are free but not specialised lenses. I was able to use her nhs voucher towards the glasses though.

Being completely serious here: divorce him.

At least you then won't have him wasting the family money on his toys whilst your kids go without. Source: my own childhood.

MILLYmo0se · 31/07/2024 00:01

I was giving him the benefit of the doubt, and thinking he just didn't really grasp what they were and thought you d been upsold unnecessary expensive lenses, but he won't even read the studies?! Selfish man, lucky the child has you to look after their health!

endofthelinefinally · 31/07/2024 00:02

He sounds ignorant and selfish. I cannot believe he would begrudge his child glasses that enable her to see. Decent parents want the best for their children.

Notthatcatagain · 31/07/2024 00:07

If these had been available 30 years ago, my child's life would have been very different. I would have sold everything I owned to get them

BestZebbie · 31/07/2024 00:08

I would bet that your DD5 is also more active and throws her body around more frequently than your DH does, all the more reason to make sure she can see and has good depth perception.

Beautiful3 · 31/07/2024 00:22

I bought those for my daughter. They're worth it. You don't want her to be blind without her glasses. They massively slow down eyesight deterioration. My optician told us to make sure she gets plenty of sun light and spend less time on her phone/ipad. All those things will help.

BlackSwan · 01/08/2024 09:18

I would actually put the PS5 on EBay to make a point.

So he's fine to spend money on a new gaming machine for himself, but not to buy his daughter glasses?

I'd be absolutely fuming, and would have lost all respect for him for evermore in that moment. What a pleb of a man.
