Swollen optic nerve

Took DD10 for her yearly check up yesterday and was informed she has a slight blurred retina margin on one eye and possibly on the other. She has no headaches, dizziness or vomiting. The images were sent to the local hospital and we had a call within the hour asking us to attend clinic next Thursday. It’s so stressful, the optician said if they were very concerned they’d have told us to go to a&e straight away.

I know I shouldn’t have googled but it seems most causes are pretty awful.

We feel sick with worry and Thursday feels so long to wait. Trying to be normal for DD and DS.

Can anyone advise please ?

There have been a few threads before.

It's one of those findings where it's most likely not going to be something serious, but everyone doesn't like any uncertainty at all. Sometimes re-review by a specialist eye doctor is all that is needed, sometimes an eye and/or brain scan is done as well. By far the most likely outcome is it's found to be benign and no further action needed.

If she doesn’t have any symptoms. 90% of the time it’s nothing sinister at all (I’m an optometrist). They urgency is to not miss the 10% who would obviously benefit from early intervention.

Thank you @Unseenentity yrs it’s the uncertainty and I’m struggling a bit.

@theeyeofdoe thank you. The line does look blurred compared to 2 years ago. She wasn’t sure if one eye or 2. I really appreciate how thorough they were and that she’s been referred.

I’m thinking the worst I know - I do work in the nhs and I see bad scenarios more than I should… so probably not being rational.

Hi any updates? Im going through this at the moment with my little boy (9) and honestly can’t stop crying, cant sleep ect, google has sent me over board, im so scared, and dont know what to do

BlueLimeRun · 25/02/2025 06:29

@Cantsleepthinker sorry to hear you are going through this. It was fine, she had 2 appointments at the hospital where they did detailed scans. They’ve now discharged her. We were sick with worry but they were really good. I hope you get seen soon. Any other symptoms? If no vomiting or headaches, it’s likely to be nothing to be concerned about apparently.
