2 year old intubated due to croup

Hi all. I'm a mess 😭 My 2 year old DS started off with a runny nose on Thursday, developed a croupy cough last night but otherwise seemed fine. At around 5am this morning we noticed the skin around his ribs pulling in so went to A&E. His condition deteriorated and he is now on a ventilator in the PICU, as even after four doses of steroids and four nebulisers his sats wouldn't come above 90%.

I am so scared 😭 I had no clue croup could become so serious. He's had it before and was absolutely fine. I am so worried.

So sorry to hear this. It sounds like he is getting all the care he needs right now. Do you have anyone with you, or who can bring you what you need for staying with him?

I hope things improve for him and he soon back in a normal ward.

Gosh, I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope he gets better soon.

I had a baby on a ventilator in PICU (a long time ago). The PICU care was absolutely amazing and she was off life support after 3 days.

It's a very scary emotional time...

Thinking of you both xx

Oh OP. I’ve been there 3 times with my toddler and once with my baby. It is terrifying but he is in the right place and getting the help he needs. Sometimes they just need that extra bit of support to make them ok.

It is horrible for you but do try and look after yourself. Do you have a partner so that you can take it in turns being there and getting some rest at home?

It's good that you acted so quickly and he's now getting the best treatment. Hope he's soon on the mend.

Thank you, yes DH is currently home with DD and we'll be swapping in the morning. I'm trying to get some sleep but I just can't!

I'm sorry you're going through this, how upsetting. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery and that he's off the ventilator soon. Big hugs xxx
