Doctors again?

My little boy, 2.5 years, had a cough and slight temp two weeks ago, with a bit of gunk in the eye (no redness).
Doctors said just a cold, monitor, Calpol and we just washed his eyes carefully with saline.
He is still sleeping SO MUCH. 3.5 hour naps. 12 hours at night.
He is completely off his food except for the occasional fruit and/or biscuit which are his favourite.
Drinking enough, with encouragement.
He has full energy when he is awake.
His cough is much better only coughing at night a bit, however, his eye gunk has returned today.
I am worried about the eating and needing so much sleep but I am sure he is just fighting the cold off.
Doctors never do swabs here which is strange! In my country they always test right away if it is influenza etc etc.
Any thoughts? He usually bounces back quicker.

Food wise I wouldn't worry so much and have always been told not to worry too much where food is concerned, especially if still snacking/picking at whatever they fancy when they fancy it, as long as he is drinking well and still passing urine.
If the temp has gone, and he has full energy and playing, not lethargic when awake then it sounds like he may be slowly on the mend and the napping may just be fighting the rest of the viral off!
Try cool boiled water on cotton pads to clean the eye and see how he goes, unless it's inflamed, red, sore and really oozing gunk?!
If you're concerned then you can always seek advice from the GP. Hope he feels 100% soon!
