When do toddlers learn to jump?

My son is 2 in less than a month and still can’t jump, he just stamps one foot. When did your kids jump?

Mine is 2 in August and has just (last couple of weeks) started jumping.

Later that you would think.. can’t remember exactly but I’m sure it was quite a while after my DS turned 2.

2 years and 5 months, HV wasn’t concerned at 2 years& 3 months as such as all other physical milestones met, I spoke to the GP at an unrelated appointment who referred for an X-ray just to check and all ok but I found a really good physio channel on IG that helped and now just before 3 years old won’t stop jumping on or off things… fun

unless you’ve got any other concerns or indicators such as uneven leg creases etc then just keep practicing off things, squatting down to pick up and stepping up
on a block and going up on tip toes to reach etc!

Adopted my son when he was 23 months. He just kind of bent his knees quickly at that point! He was definitely over 3 when he finally mastered it! He’s now 5 and all on track with his development. It was funny watching him try and jump for a long time!

My daughter was definitely less than 2 BUT she was an early walker and obsessed with her (toddler) trampoline. She was the only one of her little group of friends (5 of them) who was jumping at their 2 year check though so on that basis I wouldn't worry!

DS was 3.5

My eldest was heading for 4 before she jumped!
she was a very physically capable & well coordinated toddler but very very cautious

She's 16 now & it didn't hold her back 😃

We were taught at medical school children jump at 3 and hop at 4. And you can’t skip until you can hop.

I can’t remember and my child is only 3! I think it was well after 2 1/2, remember them being very stompy. They’re jumping up and down from everything now.

This is very interesting! I was expecting like 18/20m or something 😂 I’m very reassured to see that the majority are after 2 and a half!

My DS used to kind of bend his knees and spring up again (with both feet remaining on the floor) and say he was jumping…. So he could definitely talk before he could jump.

I remember worrying about this with DS1 (but I worried about everything!) He was about 2.5 and DS2 about 2 I think. Both have hypermobile joints though (beyond normal range)

That seems very late - my DD started ballet at just over 2 and could definitely skip. Some of the other older children couldn't, but most could.

DD is 2 year 5m. She has been able to do a very low wobbly jump for about 2m but has only in the last week or 2 for confident with it- she is currently bouncing everywhere as a result!

(I don't know when they start jumping but I stopped being able to at 70)

My 21mo does the feet on the ground bouncing up and down thing at the moment. He was a very early walker so I'm interested to see how old he is when he does his first jump😁

Same here. He didn't even seem like much of an outlier either as about half of his gymnastics class couldn't jump before they turned 3.

Just before 2. It was very cute seeing how proud they were at finally managing it. They hopped not long after they turned 3 so I guess quite early by the sounds of it, but they were walking early so I guess have had more time to practice.

After two and a half both times I think!

Seriously though, there's not much cuter than a toddler who's trying to jump and not quite worked it out yet so enjoy it 😁 the week after they learn where they jump everywhere like a newborn lamb is good too. He sounds like he's on track 😍

My second was 12mo, but he went to the trampoline place a lot with his 2yo brother. My first was about 18mo.

I don't think it really matters. They will learn to jump in their own time and it's not really that amazing. 😂🤷‍♀️

Also to add, some babies are chunkier than others and I'm sure it must be harder to pull up all your body weight if you are a chunkier baby.

Mine were both very slim so I think it helped them to jump, especially my younger one. He is the tallest and slimmest baby I've seen.

I think my DD was 3 which felt like a long time, she’s not behind with anything else.

My dd was nearly 3. Like a pp said above, she is a cautious personality. She was late-ish to walk too (not walking completely unaided until about 16mo).

She definitely did the bending knees quickly thing that someone described! I have a video of her doing it to music when on holiday, 2y3mo. So adorable

DD1 didnt jump until 2yrs 8months. At her review at 2.5yrs, the HV said to give it 3 more months and if she still wasn't jumping, they would refer us to to OT / physio - but that have been because there is also a query over mild hypermobility. She didn't start walking until 19months so i think she's just been late generally on her gross motor skills. She also did the knee bending thing for ages before she actually made it into the air.

A proper 2 feet of the ground jump? About 2 and a half. Until then it was that cute little jump they do where they lift one leg then the other quickly 🥰
