Scarlet fever

Morning all,

My 5 year old daughter saw the GP Friday and was started on penicillin for tonsillitis and scarlet fever, they gave us normal penicillin liquid with no flavour added. She keeps gagging on the antibiotic and bringing it up, I’m just wondering could I phone 111 to ask for flavoured antibiotics or is this not appropriate use of 111? Thanks

I'm not sure it comes flavoured? It is an unpleasant taste, could you get a lollipop òr something to give her straight afterwards?

Pen v is often tricky to get into kids, as it is unpleasant tasting and needs to be taken four times a day. Have you tried mixing it in pleasant tasting food or drinks to mask the flavour? If you are just not managing to get it into her then it probably is worth chatting through the options with an out of hours GP. I'm pretty sure pen v doesn't come in another flavour, but there are alternative options available for tonsillitis such as clarithromycin, which tastes only marginally better but is only twice a day, so may be less of a battle to get into her.

I mixed the antibiotic with icecream sauce and it masked the taste.Toffee sauce was the best.
