Grid pattern rash on back

We are currently on holiday and i have noticed a grid pattern rash on DS2s back. I initially thought it was an imprint from a sunbed or even an area that has tanned more somehow from a chair or sunlounger but it isn’t because we’ve checked everything.

any thoughts on what a grid like rash could be? The area is about ten cm x eight cm

He’s a teenager if that makes a difference

Was she wearing something with netting/mesh? Could be sunburn through a grid like pattern on clothing? I don't think there's any sort of pathological/natural rash that would present in such a uniform way. But I'm no expert.

lollydu · 12/07/2024 09:19

Sorry should have said he not she

Kelta · 12/07/2024 09:20

No I considered that but nothing with mesh or netting

He’s also barely seen the sun. He’s under the shade with a top on constantly. He’s likely to return home as pale as he arrived!

This is the rash. It’s on his back slightly higher than where I’d expect to see a shingles rash

It really doesn't look like a rash.

It looks much more like an imprint from something external.

I would leave it and wait to see if it expands/changes.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 12/07/2024 11:18

Does it look like fake tan? I’m wondering if he’s sat on something after someone who’s used fake tan.

It isn’t something I’d worry about- unless it changes. It will either wash off or fade.

Kelta · 12/07/2024 11:18

I know it doesn’t look like a rash which is why I initially ignored it. But it is a rash.

I’ve done quite a bit of Googling and there are various images online of others who have similar grid pattern mystery rashes. Can’t find any that have been formally diagnosed though

I have been known to bruise like that. Very sensitive reactive and can bruise from scratching an itch.

Kelta · 12/07/2024 11:19

The spots are darker like you’d expect a rash to be. It doesn’t look like fake tan.

it’s really odd

I've seen similar from a bag strap.

Ha! He’s a lazy teenager and would not carry my bag!

The spots are so evenly spaced it really looks like it is an imprint, not a rash.
What about the bed - undersheets?

JackieGoodman · 12/07/2024 11:22

Looks like an imprint rather than a rash so from a mattress, blanket, chair etc, how long has he had it?

Backpack when travelling?

NeonLover · 12/07/2024 11:26

This is definitely due to something external rather than any pathology

Kelta · 12/07/2024 11:28

It wasn’t on his back on Monday. I noticed it on Tuesday evening and assumed it was an imprint. It’s still there.

it looks like an imprint certainly. It looks like the underside of a steam iron or like someone has stepped on him.

It’s only when I’ve looked more closely this morning that I’ve realised the bumps are slightly raised. I’m certain it’s a rash. Or he’s an android and his circuitry is showing.

Can you take him to see a pharmacist? Is it itchy? If it was me, I'd try an antihistamine and see if it lessens.

Kelta · 12/07/2024 11:35

We have antihistamines with us so I’ll see if they help

Has he lay on a hairbrush?!

MassiveOvaryaction · 12/07/2024 11:36

Has he lay on a hairbrush?!

Grin I don’t think so but the lumps are slightly raised rather than indents and they are larger than would be caused by bristles on a hairbrush

My husband had the same pattern on his back a few months ago! His was like a non blanching rash. It was so weird, only lasted abou a week. Google said alien abductions 🤣. Theres a lot of people who have experienced similar online.
