Incline cot / moses basket?!

Hi All,

Hoping someone can help. We went to A&E last night because we have our 4 week old daughter infacol for the first time and she started choking hours after and was unable to breathe. The whole thing was exceptionally scary and we are just glad she's ok.

We saw a paediatrician at the hospital who told us it sounded likely she has colic / reflux, and to stop giving any infacol. The other advice was:

• for me to go dairy free since I'm EBF
• to incline the mattress in our moses basket by 45 degree to help decrease acid reflux

I'm shocked at the advice about inclining the mattress because all safe sleeping advice says to place baby on a "flat, firm mattress". Is this normal advice? Anyone else? We haven't done it because she sleeps ok on a flat mattress and I'm nervous it's actually more dangerous to sit her up at that angle especially without supervision while we sleep?!

I'm also kind of baffled that I need to completely change my diet (which I'm willing to do) and wondered if this was quite common for reflux / colicky babies??

TIA!

I have a snuzpod for my baby to sleep in and it comes with a bar you can slot underneath to incline the cot. Does yours have a similar function?

I've propped some books under the moses basket stand to incline it before.

The current safe sleep advice is not to incline baby's cot/moses basket. If she's sleeping fine with it flat, then keep it flat.

I personally wouldn't rush in to be excluding dairy from my diet either. Colic is really really common on babies of this age and it usually passes. Do you think she's showing signs of reflux?

That must have been really frightening @ciavent90!

It's been a long time since I had a tiny baby but ours did have to have to moses basket/cot inclined for a while (due to breathing problems not reflux). We put something under the actual basket, not the mattress, so it was still the same sleeping surface just at an angle.

Ds2 was colicky but I didn't massively change my diet (although there were a few things that seemed to trigger like citrus fruits so I stopped eating those). Definitely had friends who had to give up dairy though.
