First time mum and really could do with some advice.

My son had bacterial tonsillitis last December. After a trip to a&e because he stopped drinking and I struggled to get his fever below 39.5 they've diagnosed it again but said its severe.

I expected he'd crash out after the hospital trip and he didn't. Longest stint he slept last night was 50min once. Otherwise he'd fall asleep for 15 min and wake screaming. He can't breastfeed at the minute as it's too painful but thankfully he's taking water. He's never taken a bottle or a dummy no matter now much I try.

We're alternating paracetemol and ibuprofen, he's been given penicillin which he is spitting out and were giving him dairy free ice cream as its the only.thing he'll have (he's cmpa)

He's had 2 hours sleep in the last 24 hours and he is in so much pain I can't stand it.

I phoned paeds in the early hours and they said they'd do nothing else and he's just in for a bad 24 hours.

If anyone has been in position please help! He has so much saliva hes borking on it, choking then screaming. I've had an hour sleep myself and im at a loss. He's stopped settled for dad too.

Thank you!
X

If he can't swallow his saliva and you aren't confident he is getting his meds down, then I would go back. Did you not get a period of access to the ward when you left A and E?

They didn't. We were very much shuffled out like it was no big deal. I think we may have to. I've spoken to the Dr's 3 times now and been told each time that they'd do nothing but send him home. Will just have to try.

If it”s the yellow liquid penicillin it’s vile and no wonder your son won’t take it.

There is a red coloured (cherry I think?) flavoured penicillin which is much nicer and easier to bet down them. I would ask to change it to the red one.

i genuinely don’t understand why they give that yellow one out and expect children to have it 4 times a day!

Have you tried the liquid? The one we had was vile so DC couldn't take it. In the end we had to crush up tablets into jelly sweets.

Does he have those squidgy Ella pouches?

If so, squeeze a bit out of one then fill it up with the antibiotics

Has he got any difflam spray? Really helps with the pain, and can be used in young children.
