Chickenpox or HFMD? Pic included

Hi all, I’m waiting to hear from docs as to when we can come see them and googling different things at the same time… does anyone recognise the rash?
it’s on my DD’s legs, hands and on top of her head. She had super high temp two days ago and was throwing up. Now no temp but this rash here. It was particularly horrible at night as he was meaning and scratching it all the time. I’m waiting for docs appointment confirmation but I find it’s useful to do your research in advance when dealing with GPs… thanks 🙏

I don't think the HFM is itchy is it? Is it on the palms of her hands? I have to say it doesn't look like either that OR chicken pox to me!!

Veryoldandtired · 13/06/2024 12:57

thanks for your reply @SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter .. hmm that’s true, normally it’s not. She also has blisters in her mouth. Wonder what will the docs say…

It looks like angry herpes to me- they are impossibly itchy and can cause a high temp before an outbreak. Easily treated with antiviral aciclovir.

longdistanceclaraclara · 13/06/2024 13:10

Doesn't look like either. The ankle in particular looks like nettle stings

Nogodsnomasters · 13/06/2024 13:10

The foot one is too clustered together lumps to be chicken pox, chicken pox are usually separate spots not all clumped together like that.

Fipfop · 13/06/2024 13:31

My daughters hfmd was similar to this

MakeMineExtraHot · 13/06/2024 13:33

HDM is incredibly itchy!

Allicanteat · 13/06/2024 13:35

Probably hfm but i dont think that was itchy.

Veryoldandtired · 13/06/2024 13:38

thanks all! I’m taking notes 📝

HFM
the lack of spots on the trunk I think are making it unlikely to be CP. They don’t usually cluster either.
My younger son was really unwell with HFM, more so than with CP.

Sooo, thank you everyone once again!!! we just got back from our GP. He thinks it’s a skin infection because it’s around her joints mainly, so we’re in for a 5 day course of antibiotics! He says it’s not quite right for fhmd and definitely not chickenpox - so some sort of bacterial infection instead.

My first thought was impetigo, but then that'd be on her face wouldn't it? Also the blisters go all crusty and these don't seem to be. I don't know! Hope she feels better soon.

Veryoldandtired · 14/06/2024 14:26

@SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter thank you! She is well within herself which is good but I think it’s actually hfmd because now the rash is on her fingers and palms and also on soles of her feet. There’s also one blister near her mouth. Maybe there are two things we are dealing with here 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m down with this bug too now so I might have different symptoms that would tell us more…

There is a form of hfmd that targets areas where they've had eczema such as elbows, backs of knees. Not sure if that applies here but we defknitly weren't just restricted to hands feet and mouth.

Veryoldandtired · 15/06/2024 00:22

@Fipfop that would actually make sense because my daughter is prone to eczema!

another update for anyone who might be looking at a similar thread. It’s DEFINITELY HFMD!! Now I have it and can 100% concur that it’s been named coxsackie virus for a reason! Don’t believe when doctors say spots should not be itchy - they are itchy, burny and painful. On the plus side, I hope I loose some weight this week as I cannot eat anything at all. Breathing hurts let alone eating or drinking. 😂

Awww, you poor sausage. That's pants! Hope you feel better soon. How's your daughter now?

Yes it is. DD has just had it. She found the itching unbearable.

My younger son was really unwell with HFM, more so than with CP.

So was DD. She had it at age 23,

I'm sorry you have it as well @Veryoldandtired. I hope you both feel better soon Flowers

Nogodsnomasters · 16/06/2024 20:57

HFM is 50x worse as an adult than it is as a child so you have my full sympathy. I was always so grateful that I never caught it when my son had it as a toddler. However he did give me scarlet fever which landed me in the hospital for a 2 night stay so apples and oranges 🤣
