DD Back injury after fall

SarahAldwin · 02/06/2024 14:31

DD 13 was playing rounders on Thursday grass was wet and she was in bare feet. Anyways she went to stop and slipped landing on her back winding herself in the process.

Since she has been gingerly moving around really struggling with simple tasks of dressing or reaching her feet to put socks or trackies on. There was a medic there and said it’s likely to be all muscle damage which I agree with.

ive been giving her regular paracetamol and ibuprofen with heat packs too. She was in a hot bath last night but struggled to get out of it with the pain.

im used to sports injury’s but neither kids have ever had a back injury. She’s able to walk and move around it’s worse when she moves her neck, takes a deep breath and moving from sitting to laying or vice versa.

im a bit stuck as to what to do. Muscles will take ages to heal and im pretty sure we would know if anything was broken. One of the mums there did say she hit the ground hard.

im just worried and lost as to what to do. Is there anything else I can or should be doing at home.

I would call 111 and see if they think she needs to be seen by a doctor. I'd be a bit worried about it hurting when she takes a deep breath and the neck pain.

DailyEnergyCrisis · 02/06/2024 14:50

Of course you should seek medical advice if your child is experiencing severe pain. Call 111 at the very least or go to minor injuries with her.
could be a fracture rather than break.

TwigTheWonderKid · 02/06/2024 14:53

Call 111. Chances are she's fine, but let a qualified medical professional tell you that. You really don't want to mess around with back injuries.

I realise this had made me look dumb. It was at a camp and they had a paid paramedic there. The group lead called me and my sister collected her.

I’ve contacted 111 they will call us back but I’m guessing it’s just bad muscle pain. The pain is better with pain relief but of course I’m worried too

I would take her to been seen. My mum had a fall down the stairs. A bit winded and pain in her ribs. Paramedics assumed a broken rib and brought her out of the house in a chair and not immobilised on a board. A and E agreed almost certainly broken rib. CT and x-ray came back with no broken ribs but 2 fractured vertebrae. You can only rule out broken bones with an x-ray!

I had the opposite years ago. Fell down the stairs at the station running for a train. Ankle was massive in minutes. Went to a and E "let's send you to x-ray to see which bone is broken" said the triage nurse....nope no broken bones just soft tissue. The view from the outside doesn't tell you what is going on inside

Pins and needles? Range of motion of both kegs?

She needs to be medically examined if she is getting worse not better after 48 hours.

SarahAldwin · 02/06/2024 16:50

Thanks still waiting for 111 to call back. She’s not got any pins and needles is able to move her legs. She just can’t bent herself to put on socks of dress herself bottle half again due to bending. She’s having a runny poo just now weather that’s unrelated or not I don’t know 🤷‍♀️ she is much more free with pain killers

None of that rules out a fracture. I would be going to a and e or a minor injuries unit. She needs to be seen in person to be assessed.
My mum had no pins and needles and no issues walking.

MyTwinGirls · 02/06/2024 20:27

How’s she on her feet. Also any incontinence when it happened? Any vomiting. Are you mroe worried about her head and neck or the back? What’s 111 said?

abbey44 · 02/06/2024 20:34

I had a similar fall ten days ago (landed hard on my back), with similar pain on bending, twisting and breathing. After a few days it wasn’t getting any better so I went to our local walk-in place. Turned out I’d cracked two ribs in my back - there’s nothing they do for that other than give you painkillers and tell you to rest, but I was glad I’d had it checked out. Think you’re doing the right thing calling 111 - good luck and I hope she feels better soon.

SarahAldwin · 02/06/2024 20:37

We have gone to see the GP they examined her fully and don't think there's any broken bones. She has arranged an xray tomorrow to just make sure and check her lungs but her oxygen levels are 100%. The Dr thinks she has hurt the muscles in between thr rips and sever bruises to her back and chest.
She's reluctant to move in some directions he's given her some co-coda ol every 4 hours to help. Xray tomorrow and to see the GP on Tuesday to review her. She needs to rest from sports but keep moving. She’s really lucky not to have done more damage.

People often use heat on backs.

I use to do the same.

Then I was told that heat makes inflamed muscles more inflamed and to try cold/ ice.

That maybe why the bath made her feel worse.

Haveanaiceday · 02/06/2024 21:07

Glad to hear that they are doing a thorough check, but sounds like she is OK. Hopefully the co-codamol will help her to get some good rest and she soon feels better.

SarahAldwin · 03/06/2024 13:12

The cocodamol is doing wonders for her she’s moving a lot more today. Still unable to put socks on but moving a lot more x
