Toddlers nail falling off?

Can anybody help me with this? My little boy has had this happen twice now in the last 12 months. It starts with slight redness and the cuticle seems to detatch from nail, then as the nail grows out it's as if it periodically stopped growing. It then grows out, falls off and a new nail replaces it. A family friend who's a chiropodist says that it's paronychia, but that's usually accompanied by pain, abcesses and crustiness(or pus leakage). He never seems to get any of these things, other than slight discomfort/tenderness where the area is messed with.
My GP has prescribed fusidic acid topical antibiotica but they don't seem to help...

I'm just at a loss on what could be causing it. Has anybody else experienced this with their children and know why it happens?

nail problems can be associated with psoriasis sometimes. Any pitting marks in the nail?

Tell them you want it swabbed. It could be fungal so would need a different cream. That way they will treat it correctly if it is growing anything x

Nope, he did have on his other one when it grew back in. But not before he lost the nail x
