Steroid and school going

Hi, My dc, 5, was diagnosed with a viral wheeze with low oxygen levels and was prescribed 3 day oral steroids. Does any one know if we can send them to school while on steroids. Would like to know everyone’s thoughts. Thanks😊

Would send to school when 100% better - rather than specifically on or off steroids.

Steriods are typically given when quite poorly so I would not rush, but the final day if three day course maybe fine.

It's fine, my child is on long term steroids. It's really more whether they actually feel well enough to go or would be better resting at home.

I have read that during steroid treatment there is a risk of catching viral/bacterial infections easily and also instances where chickenpox has been an issue; I’m a bit worried about that 🙁

Yes your immune system is lowered on steroids, but honestly, with a 3 day treatment that won't be the case. It will barely be in his system before he's stopped the course anyway. It's more an issue for those like my child on long term or high doses. Presumably he's already started the course so maybe let him have tomorrow off as it's Friday and hopefully he should feel much better by Monday.

Not on a 3 day course no the long term effects can be lowering immunity, I was on steroid for crohns a while back and had to avoid crowded places etc
but as long as your child is well in themselves and you feel they are ready to go back to school they can go, my son has asthma (since 3 and is now 13) so lots of experience with steroids (also nurse)

Loads of children go to school on steroids, and a course that short would not significantly impact the immune system. The bigger question is whether he still needs regular inhalers, and are the school happy to have him there if he does.

Hey would you think this is still the case for a 7 day course. I'm also concerned about sending ne 10 month old to creche due to the steroids possibly compromising her immunity

Is she well enough to go to nursery?

cstack · 06/10/2024 08:41

Yes in great form. She's just been put on a 7 day course to get rid of a lingering viral cough. My concern really is will the 7 day course compromise her immune system and make her more supseptable to the other infections that are in the creche at present
