Need advice on sickness bugs please?!

So my little boy got a sickness bug which started last Saturday night. He was sick twice in the night, then once Sunday. Monday he had 2 loose nappies. Tuesday back to normal.
Come Thursday, I was then sick twice, and had diarrhoea all day. Friday I had diarrhoea but no sick.
Now today, my little boy has loose nappies (mucus) and a gurgling belly, off his food (not completely but not eating as much very picky) and has a temperature (37.6 and then gave calpol)
He's been playing and happy, but had quiet cuddly moments.

Could this be a new bug?! I thought the bug I had was from him.. I've only been to work and with him, so not in crowded places etc. could it The same bug but surely a temp wouldn't develop this late? Has anyone experienced symptoms coming back a week after?

I'll get advice from GP if no improvement tomorrow as this just started today but just wanted peoples experiences please

It's likely to be the same bug - I've had one since Monday this week and still don't feel 100% today. I would make sure he's drinking well, stick to a really plain diet and see how he goes over the next 24 hours.

Oh wow :( hope you feel better soon! I took some diarrhoea relief yesterday and since then I've felt okay. Appetite still isn't 100% I will say that! But no nausea or sickness anymore.. And I did sleep for most of Thursday and Friday.
Just seems strange that my little boy seemed fine, appetite seemed better etc then two days after I get ill he's got a funny belly again? And the temperature just seems strange to me.. I must say the diarrhoea I experienced was the worst I've ever experienced it. So I did wonder if it was a different bug? As my little boy only had two loose nappies.. where as I went to the toilet (loose) 13 times in 24 hours.. Who knows :( poor boy..
he's still drinking and is eating small amounts. Still having wet nappies been encouraging him to drink today. Fingers crossed tomorrow is okay/better.

I don't know if I perhaps set it off as I gave him a yogurt drink this morning. I've read diary after a sickness bug isn't a good idea? But it wouldn't explain the temperature?! :(

Thank you for your comment x

Most likely the same bug that’s not fully out of his system.

I’d avoid dairy and eggs for 3-5 days and give him a dairy free probiotic for him.

Wow do you think? Thank you for the advice.

I did stupidly give him a yogurt drink this morning. I thought he'd be alright to have one by now (he loves them and been holding off) and since then the mucus nappies started and he went cuddly on and off. But the temperature has thrown me?! He's not had a temperature this whole time.. argh the worry :(

Thank you again x

@givemesomewine the temps not massively high so we would machine it’s just his body fighting off the bug. Could you make him a smoothie to get some nutrients in him?

Id just fill him up with veggies and fruit, you can get soya yogurts which shouldn’t hurt his tummy.

LizzieBennett73 · 04/05/2024 21:10

Yes, dairy isn't great after a tummy bug. I'm just eating toast with flora spread as it seems to be all my system can tolerate at the moment - not great when you're diabetic and shouldn't eat carbs. Hope he's better soon.

Thank you - this is true and hopefully that's just the case. Thank you for the reassurance.

I'm a single parent and sometimes having no other adult to share worries/thoughts with takes its toll :( so helpful this platform to share adult communication in times of worry.

He had some strawberries and peaches today. And some of a smoothie but didn't want much.
Will of course try again tomorrow 🤞🏻

I popped out to get some dairy free together and dairy free cake slices for him as a treat when he's feeling a bit better (egg wheat and dairy free) just incase!

Thank you again x

Definitely the same bug. My 15 month old has had a similar low level but long D&V bug in the last week that lasted 6 days in the end, lots of sick the first couple of days then just once or twice a day plus pale, loose poos.

I took her to the GP on day 4 and the doctor said these bugs can last up to 2 weeks, as long as she wasn’t dehydrated (thankfully she still breastfeeds and wanted that) and wasn’t very unwell with it, not to worry until after 2 weeks. She lost a fair bit of weight in the time though bless her.

Honestly I feel so stupid even giving him the yogurt drink. He loves them and even asked for another! But didn't give him another thankfully!

The thought of dairy makes my stomach turn.. so why I thought I could give it to him so soon after a bug.. feel so stupid :(
All I've had today is toast and a few chicken nuggets. No wonder he's poor belly has been gurgling today.. lesson learnt!!
Thank you for your kind words and I hope you feel better soon too. Get lots of rest and I found diluted squash helped me x

Oh bless her heart!! That's sad 😣 these bugs are awful aren't they?!
Honestly I feel so so stupid giving him a yogurt drink so soon after him 'recovering' from the bug?! No wonder his belly has been gurgling today and a temp.. he's still fighting it isn't it :( bless him.

Thank you for sharing your experience and hope your little one is feeling much better now.
He was first sick Saturday just gone (during the night) so I guess me giving dairy was WAY too soon and he is absolutely still recovering. Ahh 😣 well, it's put my mind at ease a little all these helpful comments for sure.

Thank you x

Update everyone..

5 hours after calpol and temp was 38.9. He didn't wake up I went to check on him. Given calpol and within 7/8 minutes it's 38.1

I've carried him into my bed and usually he would wake up and ask for trucks. He even saw his car on the side but he's proceeded to just lay in bed and try go back to sleep..
he had cold feet as well when I first initially took his temp reading. I don't know if this seems normal.. for him to not even sit straight up and be alert? I know it's the middle of the night but idk..

Belly still gurgling away :(

Further update..

Still has temp, off his food. Woke up with a nose bleed?! Took him straight up hospital. Checked him over (ears, nose, throat, chest, belly) said all fine throat a little red but said it sounds viral ???

One minute he seems happy and chatty and next he's cuddly and sad. Hasn't wanted much to eat and looks shattered :(

Ah bless him, I remember thinking mine was clear of a vomiting bug nearly 48 hours.later, so I gave her a full meal and that's when it got worse. Viruses are so varied and they can't do much for them medically except ride it out. The way the temperature is up and down and brought down with Calpol (along with other symptoms) is why they're said virus. I think I read COVID can cause nose bleeds. Remember a temperature is his body's way of fighting off the illness, should run it's course and he'll have antibodies for next time it comes around. K

Thank you for your comment and reassurance!

Although he never had a temperature at the start of this bug at all. He developed the temperature yesterday afternoon and it's been constant since then (but it does come down with calpol/ibuprofen)

They did ask me if he was sneezing, coughing etc and I said no.. the only thing they could see was his throat was a little red apparently. Other than that literally everything seemed normal.

Today has probably been the worst day for eating. He's had barely a thing and is having such a long sleep.. he hasn't slept longer this entire time!! Just hope they are right and it's just viral

Is a temp of 38 with ibuprofen in system normal?!
He slept nearly 3 hours. Woken up happy enough? But doesn't want any food still..
just given calpol so hoping that brings his temp down more than a reading of 38.1?!

Am I wrong for worrying this much?! What are warning signs to look out for as a reason to take him back? I don't want to get fobbed off

Sunshineclouds11 · 05/05/2024 17:54

How old is he?

Sleeping a lot is good them to fight off whatever it is, also the temp is.
As long as it is dropping with medicine and not rising.

Still having wet nappies?

The being off food is fine just have to make sure they are drinking.

Bramblecrumble22 · 05/05/2024 18:22

Main worry will temperature is dehydration, so as sunshine clouds says. Try not to worry too much about the temperature 38.1 is not that high, for fighting bugs. And longer than 2 days temperature, cos they are normally and 24 hour/48 hours bug. They even say now that you don't need to give medicines to lower a fever, just give it for pain relief.

He was 2 start of feb.
Yeah still wet nappies! Must be bug, whenever he eats ( which is tiny amounts) his belly gurgles for a while and then he doesn't want food.

Thank you for your comment

Since this evening I now feel sick again, no appetite and terrible headache :( so must be a long bug!

Thank you so much! He's drinking plenty today.
Temp also has come down to 36.8 now with calpol. Thankfully!

Since I had the bug Thursday / Friday I haven't felt great but felt more human yesterday and Friday evening. Now I have a massive headache, feel strange, feel sick and the thought of food is gross.. so maybe it is a really longed out bug we've both had :(
Feel like I need a good bath and bed! Can't wait for my son to feel better again x
