Toddler constipation and laxido

Hello!
My 2 year old had been very constipated (despite good diet) since Christmas and started laxido 2 months ago which has had amazing results. He started at 2 sachets a day, then the gp said go to 1 or 1/2 sachet a day then he can go off it.

Anyway, he's been off it for a few days and his poo is firmer and he seems to be uncomfortable again.
I'm going to restart the laxido (gp said this is ok)

Question is, is it ok long term? Can he just stay on it forever?! Still working on diet etc.

Thank you!

Yes it won't have permanent effects - all it does is keep the liquid for absorbing into the gut and have it remain in the poo to keep it soft. Its not a bowel stimulant so he won't get reliant on it in anyway - it's literally just a stool softener xx

In terms of life time intake of laxido, it will be less if he has enough now. Bear with me here. When children have been constipated for a while, the last bit of the gut (rectum), which is a stretchy squeezy hosepipe, gets stretched up, so it doesn't squeeze very well, and is a reservoir that can build up big poos. WIth enough laxido, ie emptying out all the old rocks of poo, and then keeping the poos daily and soft and squidgy, then the rectum can slowly shrink back down, and get back decent function, meaning being able to gradually come off the laxido. But come off too quickly, and you can lose the progress made, and go backwards, meaning ultimately needing treating longer.

So you've done the right thing going back on. Are you familiar with www'eric.org.uk ?

Hello @CTW23 How is your little one doing now? We have just been prescribed Laxido for our 3 year old who has always had firm poos / constipation but we didn’t realise what an issue it was until trying to potty train. Hope your little one is doing well.
