Chicken pox or HFM or something else?

DS (12 months) came out with a rash on bum and arm yesterday including some blisters. Has got worse today and spread all over both legs. Took him to the pharmacist and they think chicken pox but I’m thinking it looks more like HFM? Planning to take him to the doctor tomorrow anyway but just wondering if anyone has any thoughts in the meantime.

photo of arm as worst / first area to get it but looks like this all over both arms and legs now

It looks like hand foot and mouth spots but I'd avoid ibuprofen just in case

Badgertime · 25/04/2024 20:17

Is it itchy?

Looks like pox to me.

Springbaby2023 · 25/04/2024 20:19

No it doesn’t seem itchy to him, he doesn’t seem bothered by it at all. He has been unwell for about 5/6 days with a slight temp

I would say that's chicken pox..

dementedpixie · 25/04/2024 20:49

Is there any on his torso?
If not I'd think HFM rather than chickenpox

Springbaby2023 · 25/04/2024 20:57

None on torso (so far)

Chicken pox normally starts on torso so if it's just arms and legs I'd go with HFM.

Looks like HFM to me.

Icanseethebeach · 25/04/2024 21:38

I would say not CP.

Springbaby2023 · 25/04/2024 21:52

Thank you, I really hope you are all right about HFM not CP as we are due to go on holiday soon 🙈

No spread overnight so I’m assuming it’s not CP as they’d be everywhere by now

Chicken pox.

CelesteCunningham · 26/04/2024 07:20

I'd say HFM.

The GP told us that only chickenpox crosses the hairline, so if we found spots on the scalp it was the pox, otherwise HFM.

Given his torso is still clear I'd say HFM, as you say he'd be covered by now if it was chickenpox.

Hope he feels better soon, ours have had it a good few times and sometimes they've been fine and others completely miserable. I caught it once and it was awful!

Springbaby2023 · 26/04/2024 07:31

@CelesteCunningham Thank you, I’ve had HFM twice now caught from both DC and it’s the illest I’ve ever felt both times. So hoping the rest of us avoid it!
