9 year old nappy rash

Wonder if anyone can help me, at my wits end. 9 year old has suddenly started getting recurring nappy rash since January. No rash anywhere else or any other symptoms. No bowel or toilet problems, no allergies we know of and no history of this even as a baby or any skin complaints. It goes away with treatment only to come back every two weeks or so.

My 9yo has had this twice in the past few months but he is a bed wetter and he must have had strong urine or something to trigger it. Sudocrem fixed it quickly, but if you can think of no reason then I’d ask the pharmacist for advice and then the GP if they aren’t helpful.

Sit down shallow bath every night. Occasionally a drop of dettol.

Wipes to clean bum (put in bin) not loo paper, to make sure the area is completely clean and no irritation.

Also look for a barrier cream to put on once out the bath

Is there a cream you’d suggest? We’ve been using bepanthen and like I said it seems to work short term. We don’t have a bath tub but shower and clean undies every morning.

No bed wetting. DC doesn’t like smell of sudocrem- thinks people will be able to smell it

Try cavilon double barrier

TeddyBeans · 23/04/2024 17:17

Metanium do a barrier cream, it comes in a purple tube

Solgrass · 23/04/2024 17:20

Try and get a small tub for the shower that he can sit in after he’s showered, that way you can add dettol now and again and you can clean more gently (without having to scrub the area)

We had it looked at by the practice nurse (can’t get into the actual GP at the moment where we live for love nor money) and she said it does look like plain old nappy rash and gave DC a lecture on wiping her bum properly which mortified her. She recommended wipes rather than loo paper and airing it as much as possible. Like I said, it goes away but comes back like clockwork. What the hell is causing it and is there any way of actually curing it?

Do you mean just regular cleaning dettol mixed in with water? Would that not be irritating?

No not regularly. Just a drop. Usually if you’re having a full bath, one cap full added to the bath once in a while keeps on top of things. But if just in a tub, then a drop once a week until on top of things.

Will try this thanks.

Is she actually wearing nappies IE for bed wetting or another medical reason or is she getting the rash but in normal underwear?

If it's healing but coming back again I'd assume a yeast infection. Obviously consult a Dr again but id try Canestan or similar.

idontlikealdi · 23/04/2024 17:47

Are they wearing nappies? If not I'd think it's fungal.

No nappies or toilet issues at all. I cannot figure out why she’s getting this and why it keeps coming back. She’s getting really sick of it now. She wears underwear to school etc but takes them off as soon as she gets home and we try to air the bum for a while as much as possible as this seems to make the biggest difference to the rash itself and to the itchiness and clammy feeling she has. No pyjama bottoms at night either, just slathered in bepanthen. I should have bought shares in it the amount we are going through!

Sorry if this is a stupid question but you can get a yeast infection there? There’s nothing around her front bits and no discharge or anything. No ooziness. It’s just red and itchy.

Yeast infection Symptoms for various body parts. I'd take her back to the GP and say that's what you think it is and they can try some relevant ointment to see if it clears.

Edited

Thanks so much.

Would it look like nappy rash? Practice nurse did look at it and said nappy rash but would like her to be seen by a doctor anyway if we can get one

I think so, it can be a red itchy rash so sounds like what you are describing.

idontlikealdi · 23/04/2024 18:14

Yes and yes. Hope you get it sorted.

My DC had a skin infection which looked very much like nappy rash. Had a swab and cleared up with antibiotics.

Did the GP do the swab? I’m going to beg borrow and steal for a GP appointment asap now because you’ve all convinced me there could be more to this than simple nappy rash and it’s going on too long. We had almost three weeks there of relief and now today for no reason I can fathom she’s red raw again.

Could anyone recommend anything specifically for the itching? She’s going out to the bathroom in school a lot just to itch it and she’s even itching it in public at times which I know she can’t really help bless her but it is gross!

OP posts:
Eddmr · 23/04/2024 18:35

Are you sure that it isn't thread worm and the skin is sore because of the itching?

Singleandproud · 23/04/2024 18:36

Taking an antihistamine might help or at least won't have any horrible side effects.

She needs to try not to though as she could break the scan and add infection on top.

Maybe sitting on something cold might help?
