9 year old nappy rash

Polkadottie1 · 23/04/2024 17:00

Wonder if anyone can help me, at my wits end. 9 year old has suddenly started getting recurring nappy rash since January. No rash anywhere else or any other symptoms. No bowel or toilet problems, no allergies we know of and no history of this even as a baby or any skin complaints. It goes away with treatment only to come back every two weeks or so.

Would this work for the itching? I feel like bepanthen works for the rash itself (although open to trying other things if they’re even better) but really need something to help her with the itching

https://amzn.eu/d/71hPdmJ for the itching maybe this and have you tried oat baths instead of soapy washes. ♥️

Have you tried treating her for worms? Might not to that but just a thought! Get some hydrocortisone cream over the counter and that should really help. Could it be eczema? Have you changed washing powder or anything? Sweat rash maybe?

No haven’t tried oat baths. She doesn’t have sensitive skin generally but as someone said this could maybe be bum eczema

Ps I really wouldn’t wash her genital area in dettol. My dd had an issue with sore skin at the front and the GP prescribed an emollient and said to sit in baths with bicarbonate of soda in daily for a while.

GreenTrees00 · 23/04/2024 20:00

Yellow metanium is medicated. Available in pharmacies, Boots, Tesco etc. apply a very thin layer as it reacts with air to work.

It's a 'dry' cream and treats infections. Unlike bepanthlon which is a 'creamy cream' which won't treat an infection.

Get some canister to treat as a fungal infection too. Also widely available in shops.

Blarn · 23/04/2024 20:07

@Polkadottie1 look up vulvovaginitus. Its often from the PH not being balanced and is fairly common in young girls. Dr prescribed canesten for dd and just making sure she cleans really well with a flannel and water then dries well.

Edit - to look at it you would think nappy rash, same appearance.

Is it harmless to treat her for worms even if she doesn’t have them? She has no other symptoms whatsoever besides this rash

Sorry if this has been said already as I haven't read the whole thread.

You need to get to the GP. Tbh if you can't get an appointment any sooner that 2 weeks I would go to the nearest urgent care centre
This is awful for your child and the service you GP is providing is rubbish, your poor child and poor you!

Singleandproud · 23/04/2024 20:22

Worm treatment is just a tablet, if she has them it'll get rid of them if not then it's fine. You can see the Patient Leaflet on the Boots website although like most medicines lists some rare but scary side effects

MotorwayDiva · 23/04/2024 20:24

Could tights be causing the issue, I used to get very itchy in certain tights when younger.
Otherwise nears yard nappy cream was amazing for DC

I know it’s terrible. There is a chronic shortage of GPs here. A handful all retired last year and haven’t been replaced. As a result two urgent care centres I know of locally are also always packed out with quite sick people. I think they’d laugh me out of there if I rock up about a bum rash but I’m also nearing the end of my tether with it!

No she never wears tights really. Someone else recommended that too so worth a try

Yellow
Metanium
Is great for clearing up nappy rash.

Polkadottie1 · 23/04/2024 20:41

Is it ok to use fungal creams and barrier creams together? I don’t want to overload her skin. I’m doing her bum three times a day when it’s bad as it is (maybe I’m putting too much on her and making it worse?)

VeraForever · 23/04/2024 20:48

I'd be pushing for a GO appointment.
Hope you get results.

OP, you don’t have to answer this if you don’t want to, but do you have the financial capacity to book a private GP appointment? I think as you worry about perhaps unknowingly making this condition worse, it sounds really important to see a GP to get the right treatment. I appreciate appointments in your area are far and few between. Just a thought, it sounds so uncomfortable for your DD and I can hear you so desperately want to make it okay for her xx

Yes we’d have to travel a bit as none less than an hour away but you're right it’s probably worth it

how do you wash underwear?

if under 40 degrees then it could be re-infecting her.
if using softener that could cause irritation. same if using short washes that don't rinse out detergent residue well enough.

INeedNewShoes · 23/04/2024 20:55

I definitely wouldn't agree with putting Dettol in a bath. Could be worth trying a soak in Epsom salts (plain bath salts) but make sure to rinse off afterwards.

DD sometimes gets a rash on her bottom and I think it's when she sits on a surface that has been cleaned with a harsh cleaning product. Hers tends to go after a few days though. I wonder if school are cleaning the chairs with chemicals or something or leaving cleaning products on the toilet seats rather than wiping thoroughly.

We redid our bathroom four years ago thinking now our kids are bigger we don’t need a bath tub! Regretting that now. I did try a sitz bath on top of the toilet with dd once and she hated it. Most I could get her to do was dip her bum once or twice, she wouldn’t sit in it properly

If you don't have a bath is she cleaning herself properly in a shower - something else to think about.
If you get a large toy box you can fill it up in the shower and use it as a bath.

Oh and another thing, you don't keep cleaning / Flash wipes in the bathroom that might be mistaken for toilet/baby wipes? (Ofcourse no wipes should be put down the toilet before someone picks up on it).

There isn’t a cleaner bum in England at this stage and I should know, I see enough of it every day!

I wouldn't do anything until you've wormed her. It can take a couple of goes. And her bedlinen needs stripping and boil washing until the treatment has had chance to work. She must not scratch and if she does she must meticulously wash her hands and nails.

Vacuum the bed and air the mattress too.

And treat the whole family.

If if doesn't work, then I'd think fungal.
