9 year old nappy rash

Polkadottie1 · 23/04/2024 17:00

Wonder if anyone can help me, at my wits end. 9 year old has suddenly started getting recurring nappy rash since January. No rash anywhere else or any other symptoms. No bowel or toilet problems, no allergies we know of and no history of this even as a baby or any skin complaints. It goes away with treatment only to come back every two weeks or so.

Out of interest before this started had she had antibiotics for anything?

Even if it was just nappy rash they could have given you some corticosteroid cream

Seagrassbasket · 23/04/2024 18:38

My bet would be thrush/fungal infection

Not for years. She’s a really healthy girl luckily.

Antihistamines for itching.
Also check for threadworm (v itchy!). Separately, are you using any new washing powders/softners etc? We only use non-bio in our house because otherwise dh gets bad itchy rashes.

GreenTrees00 · 23/04/2024 18:47

I'd cover all bases...

Give her a dose of Ovex in case worms are contributing to the itching (won't do any harm)

Yellow metanium... dab it lightly on sore areas and it should help treat the open sores.

Antibiotics in case there's a bacterial infection.

Perhaps a fungal cream just in case too? Think athletes foot, but on a different body part.

Poor thing, hope something works soon.

Eddmr · 23/04/2024 18:35

Are you sure that it isn't thread worm and the skin is sore because of the itching?

I’m not sure of anything! Is there anyway of knowing if it’s thread worm? Would there be signs in her poo? None of her siblings having any problems. The itching has to be making it worse which is why I’d like to give her something to try to help her stop.

Taking an antihistamine might help or at least won't have any horrible side effects.

She needs to try not to though as she could break the scan and add infection on top.

Maybe sitting on something cold might help?

Worth trying an antihistamine for sure. She gets relief from going bare bum and I keep the bepanthen in the fridge so it’s cool going on

Can I get all of these OTC or would I need to wait to get some prescribed?

Any idea how long this would take to clear up if it is fungal? And would it keep coming back?

This day last week she was at swimming with a perfectly clear bum and now she’s on her tummy on her bed with a fan on ever since she came home.

Antihistamine definitely worth a shot. We have a fan in her room that helps her a lot.

How do I check for thread worm? Haven’t seen anything in her poo or different about her poo

Cavilon is absolutely the best barrier cream, you can get it on amazon

App13 · 23/04/2024 19:20

Hi Op

The only thing that worked for dd was neals yard baby barrier cream , for nappy rash . She never had it again after that

I thought the same. My son used to get a rash on his inner thigh at the beginning of potty training and was given an anti-fungal cream, cleared up within days. I’d definitely go back to the GP to take another look, perhaps take a swab.

OP, have you heard of the hand held bidets? It might be an option for after wiping just to give an extra clean.

queenofthewild · 23/04/2024 19:25

It sounds highly likely to be thrush/a fungal infection. DS used to get nappy rash as a toddler that would get worse when traditional nappy rash creams were used because it fed the fungus.

Timodene on prescription would clear it up almost immediately.

No never heard of these. Will look them up. Would you recommend?

Oh god. I could be making it worse? I’ve put a factory’s worth of cream on her bum on a weekly basis

I had one after I gave birth and could not wipe. It was amazing! I can’t find the exact one I used but here’s similar.

Don't be hard on yourself. You've sought medical attention.

I got short shrift the first time I took DS in. The doctor refused to even look at it and just gave me a lecture about wasting NHS time.

Different GP 3 days later was hugely unimpressed when she examined and prescribed.

We can only take the advice we are given by professionals. But it's ok to go back if the advice isn't helping.

Elisheva · 23/04/2024 19:31

You can buy canestan cream for fungal nappy rash over the counter. It works pretty quickly.

Polkadottie1 · 23/04/2024 18:12

Thanks so much.

Would it look like nappy rash? Practice nurse did look at it and said nappy rash but would like her to be seen by a doctor anyway if we can get one

Just chiming in- I had bum eczema at that age which looked like nappy rash.

it was just localised to my buttocks.

Doctor gave eczema ointment and stuff for the bath but sudocrem sorted it out. I know your dd doesn’t like it, but a thick layer each bed with cotton undies. Shower in morning.

To be honest it’s also a bit embarrassing that I’ve a 9 year old with nappy rash and for more than three months now. I think the nurse probably presumed I’m some kind of helicopter mum whose 9 year old can’t wipe her own backside or else we just have poor hygiene- neither of which is true!

Is there a cream you’d suggest? We’ve been using bepanthen and like I said it seems to work short term. We don’t have a bath tub but shower and clean undies every morning.

Have you tried Metanium ♥️

Polkadottie1 · 23/04/2024 19:36

Is the only way of knowing for sure if it’s fungal a swab? Would there be any point in taking a photo of the rash to show a pharmacist or would they not be able to tell the difference visually?

Would this work for the itching? I feel like bepanthen works for the rash itself (although open to trying other things if they’re even better) but really need something to help her with the itching
