My DS has yet another course of antibiotics for really bad tonsillitis. He has been given the bright yellow stuff and he hates the taste - won’t swallow it at all he goes crazy and he is strong for a 3yo. Last time he refused he had strep and had Iv antibiotics for 10 days I really don’t want this happening again. Please any tips are welcome it makes me want to cry with frustration as it will make him so much better he’s just too young to fully understand.

My son has this at the moment too and is struggling. He has sensory processing disorder and can't take tablets but he's really struggled with the taste of the liquid. It helps with a spoonful of yoghurt. It's not exactly great but better and takes the edge off.

Go back to the GP and ask for a different, more palatable antibiotic. If he won’t take it then the current one is no use

DD found flucloxacillin particularly awful - she couldn’t even go near it without gagging in the end. I thought that she was just being overdramatic until I tasted it for myself, genuinely it was like cat piss. Horrendous stuff

My 8 year old ended up needing more hospital treatment after refusing clarithromycin. I tried a tiny lick to see what he was up against. It's foul. Would chocolate custard help? A spoon before and after maybe?

When one of mine was on flucloxacillin recently I went back to the GP and swapped the liquid for capsules as I just could not get it down them/

The liquid was the most vile thing I’ve ever tasted. I emptied the capsules into jam or chocolate spread and did it that way. We managed, just but it was a long week.

Thanks everyone. Had no luck whatsoever last night or this morning. I have another GP appointment today for him and going to request capsules instead of liquid as that will surely be easier to hide!

Try mixing it in with a spoon of ice cream

WorriedMumOfThree83 · 09/04/2024 16:35

No help because the yellow one is the one my daughter will take. Reasonable to ask for an alternative though, and yes I've often thought opening capsules and mixing with something would be easier. I don't think you'll find a better tasting liquid medicine than that one sadly. Clarithromycin is an option but as PP said it is so so bitter and awful

Mix it into yoghurt or fruit juice. My 3 y old
is the same and we ended up putting it in a fruit shoot- which she loves but rarely gets!
