Calm me down please! Strep A

I’m having a midnight wobble here and headed down the wormhole of dr Google isn’t helping.
my DD6 was diagnosed with scarlet fever today after 10 days of non-specific symptoms that the gp thought were just
viral- itchy rash, sore throat, fever, tiredness, sore tummy, etc. when I took her back again today they said the throat swab they took on Friday had come back as positive for strep A and they think the rash was / is actually scarlet fever and have started her on a 10 day course of clarithromycin (she has an allergy to penicillin).
tonight she went a bit funny, sat down and went sheet white and I thought she was going to faint, so I sat her down and she lay quietly for about half an hour just cuddled into me and then perked up again. It was odd. she said later that everything felt “funny” but she couldn’t really articulate more than that.
I’m freaking out having read about invasive strep A and wondering if it could be that as she’s had it for 10 days without antibiotics as the gp thought it was simply viral. Am I overreacting? My other worry is she’s meant to be off on holiday with her dad on Friday to Tenerife and while he’s a good dad he’s very much of the school of “oh they’re fine, nothing wrong with them” and I’m worried he may miss how serious it can be.:
i guess I just need reassurance that the fact
she is (finally) on the right antibiotics is enough and that she can manage a holiday without me? I honestly feel so stressed I can’t think straight and despite her sleeping peacefully now I’m awake thinking of worst case scenarios.

I personally wouldn't allow her to go on holidays yet even if she had recovered I would imagine she would still be tired and lethargic for a week or two after.

LibbyLemoncake · 03/04/2024 00:42

I would keep a real close eye on her and don’t hesitate to take her in if she deteriorates. But hopefully the antibiotics will start working and you’ll see an improvement soon.

But yeah same as pp I would postpone the holiday until she’s back to normal.

Capsulum1 · 03/04/2024 00:48

do you think I need to have her seen again tomorrow after this “funny” spell this evening? The gp was clearly impatient with me today as I’ve been back there with her no less than 3 times since symptoms
started 10 days ago, each time being made to feel like I was overreacting, and she was still dismissive today saying strep A isn’t that scary and now she’s on antibiotics there is no risk and no reason she can’t go on holiday on Friday as she’ll have been on antibiotics for 72 hours by then etc. her dad is nice enough but will hit the roof if I try and “cancel” his Easter week holiday with her and they’ve both looked forward to it so much ☹️gp didn’t really help either by dismissing my thought that she should stay here rather than go away on holiday. I feel so confused ☹️

I would see how she is in the morning. You’ll probably start seeing an improvement now she’s on the antibiotics.
(Is there a different GP you can see if you need to? Fobbing you off when you clearly knew something wasn’t right is not a good look).

Also we’re only just Weds so she may be greatly improved by Friday, maybe play it by ear if her Dad is going to be funny about it? Is he taking her abroad?

Hoping she’ll be fine tonight and you can get some sleep x

Hi Op

My dc is recovering from Scarlett fever. I’ll be honest I had to suggest to the dr that my dc had it as had all the symptoms . I would be sending your DD on holiday.

I would get her checked out again ask for another gp

Capsulum1 · 03/04/2024 01:09

Thanks 💞it’s a busy surgery so just luck of the draw
who you see on the day 😵‍💫I could ask for a different one but likely won’t make a difference
as will just be who is free. I just really didn’t like how odd and pale and quiet she suddenly went ☹️

she is meant to be off to Tenerife with him-
a long planned and looked forward to Holiday. I know he’ll take care of her and get her to finish the antibiotics etc but he’s not, well, me and I’m nervous he wouldn’t really even notice a funny spell (he’d probably think she was just tired) and definitely wouldn’t be doing a me and wondering about invasive strep ☹️it’s one of these times I simply dont know if I’m overreacting or if I’m onto something ☹️and the gp was so blasé about it but they have missed it for the last 10 days saying it was just viral so I dont have a lot of confidence in them ☹️

Try and see a different gp and tell them this. If only just to put your mind at rest. Ask them if they think she’s ok to travel too.

but he’s not, well, me and I’m nervous he wouldn’t really even notice a funny spell

I know exactly what you mean!!
I assume he knows DD has scarlet fever? I’d be telling him there’s a real possibility she won’t be going, so he needs to prepare himself, he must have travel insurance?

But hopefully in the next couple of days she’ll bounce back. Maybe give it till Thursday to decide one way or the other?

LibbyLemoncake · 03/04/2024 12:10

How is your DD today @Capsulum1?

Capsulum1 · 03/04/2024 13:42

You are so kind to ask @LibbyLemoncake
She actually seems good today - no fever, rash less itching and is peeling which I think is a good sign and she has an appetite, I just wish I could stop worrying she’ll have another funny turn ☹️

OP posts:
Capsulum1 · 03/04/2024 13:46

I spoke to her dad who was pretty much how I expected him to be- that unless she is actively ill and can’t travel he’d like to go ahead, pointed out Tenerife is not a dangerous country he’s taking her
to, sent me the link to the hotel 24/7 doctor line, promised he’ll keep up with the antibiotics and she can have a week in the sun relaxing and getting better - I am still very nervous about it but don’t want her to miss out on it all if she isn’t very poorly which touchwood she isn’t. I am also aware if I was going to I’d probably feel braver just packing the thermometer and calpol and making sure she was resting lots between beach fun, but I know I sound controlling 😵‍💫and it is his week with her. Ugh I hate 2 households at these times 💔

Capsulum1 · 03/04/2024 13:48

I called gp this morning who said that because we were seen again yesterday and obs were all ok and she’s just started on antibiotics that they won’t see her again unless her fever returns or she deteriorates ☹️

OP posts:
LibbyLemoncake · 03/04/2024 19:42

Ahh good news hopefully she’s on the mend then (the funny turn was prob just a drop in blood pressure or something simple).

It must be hard letting her go but the 24/7 doctor is reassuring and I’m sure her dad will look after her.
Just tell her to make sure she tells him if she doesn’t feel well!!

Not that scary when treated. When left untreated, it can be scary https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/scarlet-fever/symptoms-causes/syc-20377406 ''Although scarlet fever was once considered a serious childhood illness, antibiotic treatments have made it less threatening. Still, if left untreated, scarlet fever can result in more-serious conditions that affect the heart, kidneys and other parts of the body.'' If all those symptoms were viral, didn't they offer to test and find out what virus? Especially knowing you were so worried and why wouldn't you be worried if your child is sick for 10 days
