Does a greenstick fracture need a cast?

DD fell at the end of last week and hurt her wrist. I took her to the minor injuries unit where they x-rayed it and said she had a buckle fracture. They gave her a splint, said she needed to wear it for 6 weeks but didn't need a referral to the fracture clinic.

Then a couple of days ago (almost a week after she sustained the injury), a nurse from the minor injuries clinic rang to say that the x-ray had been reviewed and it was actually a greenstick fracture so needed a referral to the fracture clinic after all. They said I should get an appointment within 2 weeks! I'm a little concerned as it's already been over a week since she hurt it and any research I've done online suggests greenstick fractures should be in a cast. I tried to call the fracture clinic on Friday but couldn't get any answer. I'll try again tomorrow but unfortunately I'm a primary school teacher and have limited options for hanging around on the phone for ages.

Wondered if anyone knows if it should heal OK in just the splint? She seems to be doing fine so far, no complaints about pain since straight after the fall.

when I was 16 I had a greenstick fracture, I had to have a cast and they could barely see the break on the x ray they showed me. I was in plaster for 4 weeks and had to keep my wrist in a sling too

Thank you. I'll probably have to keep trying to call.
