Using yellow metanium for nappy rash

wowihaveagardennow · 13/03/2024 21:42

My 11 month old has a bad nappy rash where she has broken skin on her bottom. I am so sad at how uncomfortable this must be for her and also sad that I wasn't able to prevent it - I felt like I was changing her soiled nappies as soon as they were happening. I have read yellow metanium is excellent for healing nappy rash.

I've just used some tonight but I wanted to ask if anyone knows whether this cream doubles up as barrier cream? Or do I need to use bepanthen in addition to the metanium?

Many thanks

I always found that metanium did such a good job, it didn’t matter if I used barrier cream as well. It’s hard to get out of clothing though, so be careful with it!

zeebra · 13/03/2024 21:44

Just use metanium cream- it is amazing stuff.

Yep it's literally magic in a yellow tube!

MamaGhina · 13/03/2024 21:46

Agree it works plus as much nappy free time as you can suffer! No other creams needed.

buggycough · 13/03/2024 21:49

Yes it's amazing!! I swear by it

Poppalina37 · 13/03/2024 22:04

That'll sort it x it's amazing x I just used that and nothing else x

idontlikealdi · 13/03/2024 22:13

Just the metanium and nappy free time

Emiliana52 · 13/03/2024 22:15

my baby had it bad. Nothing worked and then I put canestan on and it went!

Richtea67 · 13/03/2024 22:15

It's amazing stuff. Just use a very thin layer so you can still see skin underneath. Nappy rash will be gone in no time.

Shinyandnew1 · 13/03/2024 22:16

You don’t need anything else. Just use a very thin layer-it’s really good stuff. I used to think Sudocrem worked well for nappy rash till we tried this!

scaredofff · 13/03/2024 22:17

When ds was really bad the yellow cream was too strong. I had to wait a day or two with nappy free time then use that alternated with sudocrem throughout the day and night for a week. Every time he had a poo it would flare back up so took a long time to clear

mentalbandwidth · 13/03/2024 22:17

We ended up with cavalon prescribed by GP as the yellow ✨ didn't work with DD

TeddyBeans · 13/03/2024 22:17

I think there is a barrier cream version of metanium, pretty sure it's in a purple tube... But as everyone else has said, it's like magic in a tube! Worked wonders on my son and now my daughter as well. Wouldn't use anything else

Diversion · 13/03/2024 22:18

I just used Metanium. If the redness does not disappear or seems to be spreading it is likely to be thrush in which case use some canestan. I found Metanium especially useful when my babies were teething and had really horrible nappies.

TeenYearsAreHell · 13/03/2024 22:21

Metanium is amazing, you shouldn't need anything else.

Keep an eye on what she's eating. I found my DD got bad nappy rash when she ate certain foods.

Rainallnight · 13/03/2024 22:23

It’s amazing. You don’t need a layer of anything else.

YouAndMeAndThem · 13/03/2024 22:24

Make sure babies skin is complete dry before putting their nappy on. If they're prone to nappy rash, I'd use bepanthum or metanium barrier cream once their skin is healed and save metanium treatment cream for if they have a flare up

LongLostSock · 13/03/2024 22:26

Might be an idea to have a Dr to have a look. My son had bad nappy rash and it turned out to be fungal. He needed a medicated cream which cleared it toot sweet.

In the meantime, lots of nappy free time, make sure she's completely dry as a bone before putting on any cream (otherwise you trap the moisture to the skin), and only use water to clean her.

Hi op, metanium is good for a mild nappy rash, but if the skin is broken and bleeding, I would recommend sudocrem or bepanthen. If you wanted to, you could put a layer of vaseline on to act as a barrier. I know many parents use metanium on broken skin, and that's great that it works for them, but I've worked in nurseries for years and we aren't actually allowed to put metanium on broken, bleeding skin as it can make it worse.
Just my 2 cents 🙂

sarahc336 · 13/03/2024 22:32

Honestly it's amazing, the rash will be gone in the morning. I tend to use normal cream when everything is fine and as soon as it looks sore I'll use that instead

Copperoliverbear · 13/03/2024 22:37

Just use the metanium cream on its own it's fantastic.

Blessedbethefruitz · 13/03/2024 22:38

My first went through all the creams, prescribed daktakort a couple of times too for bleeding unidentified infections (refux and cmpa so a year of acid poops and constipation). I rated metanium highly. One I never see mentioned is sudosalve - this worked better than metanium for us, and faster. I have also had to use it a couple of times myself (!!!) and found it incredible!

This post reminds me though that other than the odd bit of sudocrem for constipated dd (now 2), she has never had any cream. Weird how different babies are.

Copperoliverbear · 13/03/2024 22:40

Also this don't have to be down to the frequency of changes, she could be teething, have a cold or something like that, anything like that can start off a sore bottom.

How did you know it was too strong?

I'm really worried I've used too much now! The amount I put on her just before bed was probably the size of 2 peas rather than 1 pea... I wonder if I should check her nappy while she's sleeping. DH literally said to me he thought I was using too much.

Oh gosh I am so scared I've made it worse right now!!
