Using yellow metanium for nappy rash

wowihaveagardennow · 13/03/2024 21:42

My 11 month old has a bad nappy rash where she has broken skin on her bottom. I am so sad at how uncomfortable this must be for her and also sad that I wasn't able to prevent it - I felt like I was changing her soiled nappies as soon as they were happening. I have read yellow metanium is excellent for healing nappy rash.

I've just used some tonight but I wanted to ask if anyone knows whether this cream doubles up as barrier cream? Or do I need to use bepanthen in addition to the metanium?

Many thanks

Metanium for flare ups and then bepanthen for day - to - day. Much much better than sudocream.

wowihaveagardennow · 13/03/2024 22:45

Also, we went to the GP and she gave us canesten. It's the second time they gave it to us.. we've only been using it 2 days but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. I wonder if I should have tried it for a few more days before trying the metanium.

And just to add, on normal days we use bepanthen after nappy changes.

Goodness, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to scare you! Please don't panic, your dd will be absolutely fine tonight. We do this as a precaution in nursery because we have to go by what the manufactures say, but as you can see by this thread, lots of parents use it and their dc have been fine, and their nappy rashes have been healed! Please don't worry.

my baby had it bad. Nothing worked and then I put canestan on and it went!

This. Nothing worked for my DD's nappy rash and she was so miserable. A layer of Caneston then a thin layer of Bepanthen worked miracles.

Bluescissorsbluepen · 13/03/2024 22:53

They yellow cream is so good I always include it in presents for new babies which gets a mixed reaction but more than once I’ve had a text saying omg thank you. My youngest is 13 and we still have a tube, anything sore gets layer.

Strokethefurrywall · 13/03/2024 22:54

I haven't had to change a pamper in 10 years now but I still remember stocking up on yellow metanium and adding it to a goodie bag for every one of my mum friends here (before we could get it in this country).

It is absolute magic!

Waffleson · 13/03/2024 22:55

I swore by yellow metanium but I only used a very small amount and only on the worst areas. I didn't smear it all over, I used white metanium or sudocrem elsewhere. I think the yellow metanium is medicated in some way. I imagine it might be a bit stingy, just like if you put antiseptic on broken skin? But it really works
.

scaredofff · 13/03/2024 22:59

He would flinch away from me and turn around/over so I couldn't get to the sore bit. I would just put him straight in the shower and wash it off (which is a task in itself esp if you can't use soap on the rash. Vicious circle)

It made the rash worse when I used it in the beginning but when it was starting to heal from sudocrem and nappy free time around a week later I tried again it cleared up the last little bit that wouldn't go and made it stay away
I think it was because the skin was broken it needed to scab over first before using it

LongLostSock · 13/03/2024 23:06

Are you giving her nappy free time? The skin needs to heal away from a damp and acidic urine atmosphere. Stick with the cream from the Dr's but make sure she is aired and dry before applying. If she has broken skin it will take a bit of time to repair, you need to aid it how you can.

TurquoiseDress · 13/03/2024 23:16

The Metanium yellow cream is magic stuff!

Although it can stain and get everywhere, it's got a kind of chalky texture

But really great for sore baby bottoms!

Milkand2sugarsplease · 13/03/2024 23:18

I went by the mantra DS's consultant said to me.

Metanium to get rid of a rash, Bepanthan to keep it away and sudocrem never! Worked a treat for us.

If skin is too broken you might need a steroid cream from the GP but metanium won't make it worse.

TurquoiseDress · 13/03/2024 23:19

I then would use Bepanthem cream for day to day once things had calmed down

TurquoiseDress · 13/03/2024 23:21

Another option is to see GP and ask for some Timodene cream especially if the rash is v red & angry looking, could be a fungal element to it

Timodene worked v well for my babies' bottoms

NoMoreNaps · 13/03/2024 23:28

Ds1 used to get nappy rash so bad he would bleed and ended up with quite bad scarring, metanium was the only thing that helped him.
He's now 13 and I still recommend it to anyone who’s dc has nappy rash.

On a side note it stains so be very careful, I still have a handbag that has a spot on it 🙄

nats2010 · 13/03/2024 23:39

If baby's bottom.is very bad and scalded, I get a pot and mix metanium, sudocrem and some clotrimazole in it if the skin has a bit of thrush making it shine. Always worked for me. I don't envy you, it's awful when they are so sore like that x

wowihaveagardennow · 13/03/2024 23:50

Oh gosh poor baby. My DD was very angry while I was putting it on but that's how she's been with every nappy change lately because of the rash. She was then ok once we put her nappy on so I hope it isn't too strong for her...

We've only just done some nappy free time this evening before bed after her bath. I really hope it isn't too little too late... I'll try do some more tomorrow. Annoyingly this rash has coincided with her being extra poopy at the moment where she's doing about 4 poops a day, so it's a bit scary having her nappy free!

And thank you so much for all your very helpful replies. Since having DD I am so grateful to MN!.❤️

Give as much nappy free time as you can. The more air that gets to the wound the faster and better it will heal. Carpets can be cleaned.

lovepets · 13/03/2024 23:59

I went to see a dermatologist recently, and he recommended metanium as a barrier cream

GoldenCrab · 14/03/2024 00:01

Metanium is great. I also use it for spots 😂

You're quite right.
I didn't realise how important nappy free time was for healing. Poor baby! Her rash has gotten angrier and angrier over the past couple of days despite trying to change her nappies asap

MillshakePickle · 14/03/2024 00:04

Hair dryer on low and warm air flow to dry before putting on cream or after bath and doing nappy free time. When dc had a really bad rash I bathed him 2x a day and did the above. He also had to have canneston.

LittleOwl153 · 14/03/2024 00:08

I've not seen it mentioned... and at 11 months might be a bit late...

But have you thought about ditching the plastic nappies and going for reusable ones?

And if you're worried about nappy free on presumably a mobile baby... stick her in an old sleepsuit or pair of leggings.. it will 'catch' any mess!
